Great backing singers without which both songs just wouldn't have had the same impact
Pink Floyds The great gig in the sky - Clare Torry
The Stones Gimme shelter - Merry Clayton

Any others

in the woodstock movie Joe Cocker sings 'with a little help' and his guitar players do the backing vocals in falsetto, sounds like girl singers, they do a fair job.

That is such a good choice. I recently heard a whole half hour radio program just about the backing vocals to that song. Go Pips (dig them suits)!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v78-ftcqpNw

BTW: lotta good backing vocals on Ry Cooder records too.

Oh, and The Great Gig In The Sky ain't really happening without the backing singers, is it...?

Cheers - C

+1 So true. :P One of my Top 5 favorite Queen songs. :D

Some other Queen songs with really prominent backing vocals are "'39", "In the Lap of the Gods...Revisited", "You're My Best Friend", "Play the Game", "Radio Ga Ga", "I Want it All", "Headlong", "The Show Must Go On", and, of course, "Bohemian Rhapsody". :P

Khashoggi, I knew you would chime in with some more Queen! They can't be beat for vocally complex songs. 8)

Backing vocals - not to be underestimated, the richness of tone they add. With some understanding of harmony every bar band can raise its game. Backing vocals give such a lift, I can't believe they're so overlooked, especially by covers bands.

The Beach Boys always had great harmony backing vocals.

Richie Sambora is a great harmonizer with Bon Jovi too (all the girls seem to really dig this band and their songs).
