To me all drive pedals are mere toys. My mighty Marshall gives me all the lead tones a man could desire.

But amongst the drive units I fool with the Blackstar is around top of the list. (An HT-Dual, in my case. That's an HT-Drive on steroids...)

Argument rages over whether the valve/tube in these type of pedals makes a meaningful difference or not - but they sure sound good, however that sound comes about.

Cheers - C

Ive got one of the Blackstar pedals an overdrive i think and its pretty good
but there are a couple of qwirks with it.

There doesn,t seem to be any way to anchor it to a board, i was thinking of making a small pedal board (as in a small no of pedals not "small" pedals ) Am i missing something here?

Also mine cuts out if the input jack is pressed all the way into the input jack socket. I tried opening the pedal up but the jack looks impossible to
access. Only thing i can think to try is some sort of spacer to prevent the
cable jack going too far in!! :?

A spacer sounds like the best option there man. To mount it you could always do the velcro thing.

Does it sound good through a solid state amp or a hybrid since it has a tube to overdrive naturally??? Or does it jus try to overdrive the amp???

Hi Dragz: well, it would take someone with more electronic savy than me to work out exactly what that tube is or is not achieving inside this pedal. People have divided opinions on whether tubes really do something useful in these kinds of circuits or not.

This, or any sort of drive pedal is essentially a type of pre-amp, and we tend to believe tubes do good things inside amplifier pre-amps so why not a pedal?

But that stuff is a bit above my paygrade. All I know is it sounds very good - to my ears anyhow.

As pedals go they ain't the most expensive: why not give it a go?

Cheers - C

Sweet. Thanks mate. Ill give it a go as soon as the guy in the shop has ordered it in. He hasn't even heard of the brand haha. But neither did I once. But the question i want answered is if it will sound great through a solid state amp. But thats what i will try when i am at the shop. Thanks.

Ah OK, well on that I can help.

I use a solid state amp for practice and that is what my drive pedals (including this one) normally get plugged into. I tend to run this through a three channel Marshall AVT - I find the crunch and lead channels on that kinda average so I put this Blackstar drive through the clean channel and I like the sound it gives noticeably better.

Nothing compares with the sound of my proper Marshall tube amp of course - and I almost never put any kind of drive pedal in front of that. But the Blackstar turns a solid state amp into a decent sounding animal at almost any volume level. Job done!

Does that tell you what you want to know?

Cheers - C

Yes thank you. Heaps of help. Because my band at the moment can't afford a tube amp. And my drive pedal died on me. not very reliable of course (Ibanez ts5) so i thought about buying a tube pedal. and i came along the blackstar. WE play mostly srv covers and other blues.
