Took some hunting...auction here

...better hurry if you want it. Case sold separately owing to extreme rarity of said case.

I remember those quite well! They were low end Japanese imports from the 1960s, sold to department stores such as, WT Grants, EJ Korvettes, JC Penneys, Sears, etc. They had names like Teisco Del Rey, Kent, Kingston, Norma and several other names which escape me now. Even though they were junk back then, there is a serious collector's market for such stuff today. Ironically, I think the case is worth more than the guitar.

The rocker switches are like those you see on 60s Ekos,Futuras and Kents but the shape and hardware don't jive,it has me puzzled.

The shape reminds me of the Jag-Stang I saw today, is that creepy or a coincidence or nothing at all?

Well I dont have a clue for the guitar or the case but I posted it on a real stuffy $@! guitar forum that I stop in sometimes though I really hate to, as I feel they are just a bunch of cork sniffing collectors who probably could not play a note and just have a lot of money. If you dont post about something vintage or weird no one even answers. But I think one of them will solve this and the case.Lets wait and see.

It'll be interesting to see if the auction ends early. I'd certainly do a little more research before letting it go for $50 (not sure what that is in AU, but it doesn't seem like enough).

Why do I feel like there's a reverse Vinnypop thing going on here?

What is this thread? Some kind of freemason initiation ceremony?

Its like an x-files episode trying to find any info on W.h Stamford.

Haha! The truth is out there - but no matter how many episodes you watch you'll never be any the wiser.

Now that we've finally seen the Ebay listing the mystery continues. Very enigmatic photos that almost but don't quite show us anything we actually need to see to make sense of it.

What shape is the top of the headstock? Any kind of writing on it?

Deeply intrigued by those three switches on the 'guard. Individual on-offs for the pickups - and...?

I wonder whether the neck and the pickguard were made on the same continent? They certainly don't want to get too close to each other. And what a fascinating tailpiece. I suppose that square hole is for a vibrato arm - or is it?

Strange thing: as has been said there is in fact a market for this sort of stuff. But the seller ("cigarette smoking man") will need to reveal much more if he wants to find a buyer...

Cheers - C

I think it is probably a Teisco Del Rey, as suggested earlier... they came with a variety of pickup combinations, but their "Strat"-style models all share those thalidomide horns, pickguards that don't quite manage to follow the contour of the edge of the body, strap button on the underside of the upper horn, bullet-like truss rod adjustment at the neck join... and a circular plate labeled "Teisco" on the headstock that evidently comes off quite easily!

They seem to be worth a couple of hundred to those who are after such things. I've seen a few Japanese guitars from the '60s sold here as "slide guitars", so they're probably pretty good for that...

I just bought a Shin-ei pedal from a local eBay seller specialising in vintage Japanese stuff, and he said that he'd been having trouble shifting gear at half the prices it had been fetching a year ago (hence my purchase of said pedal), so it'll be interesting to see how it goes.

Hi Forum members.

After diggin deeper through some of the fender forums and google, I can't see any serial numbers on it, the neck plate on the back has "Made in Japan" I can't tell you much more than this as it was from a deceased estate.

Martians post "I remember those quite well! I don't know where the uncle would have purchased this from, who would have distributed them in Australia back in the 60's.

Can I post images here somewhere

Hey guys,

I've taken your advice and taken it off ebay. I am really curious as to the history of this beast and where it has been.

Look's like I need to research the family tree to see where this thing came from.

Appreciate the advice.

Hi again musicnut: Forum users such as Martian and Mondo500 are very knowledgeable on this sort of stuff (and Mondo is in your part of the world so has extra insights into the Australian market). The name of Teisco Del Rey has come up several times in their posts and I don't doubt they're right.

Google that name and you will find plenty of info out there. I have already found many Teiscos that exhibit most of the features of your guitar, though I haven't found a dead ringer yet. Also, a view of the whole headstock (where the tuners are) would be helpful on that.

To post pictures here first sign up for a free account at a website such as Photobucket.com. Once you have uploaded some pictures hover your mouse over them in your online album. A menu will drop down below with four lines of code on it. Copy and paste the bottom line of code into a post on this website and, lo, your pictures will appear on these pages.

Cheers - C
