Hi Forum members, I have been handed down a really old guitar which is over 40 years old, it belonged to a deceased relative. It looks similar to what I have seen posted as being a Fender. It came in a really old brown buckle case which has red felt lining with the label inside the case "Manufactured by W.H Stamford + Sons Chatswood NSW Leatherette covered".

I have listed it on ebay for $50 but if it is rare I would hate to lose out on it.

Anyone familiar with what some of the old guitars are by looks, I don't want to pull it apart to look for serial numbers.

Thanks in advance.

You tell us what's written on the case, but you don't tell us what's written on the guitar? :?: :?

I Googled W.H. Stamford and Sons and drew a blank, strangely enough the posting is listed.I too would certainly take it off Ebay.

The Stamford and Sons is just the guys who made the case for it.

I found the Ebay listing and its definately not a Fender. Looks pretty cool though...

Hopefully musicnut will post back with some more information, but I suspect he'd do better at the Aussie Guitar Gearheads Forum. A lot of gear was produced in Australia in the '60s as imports from the US were expensive and took ages to arrive. Every state capital had its own manufacturers of amps, effects and guitars, and they had to re-badge them if they wanted to sell them elsewhere. The local industry largely died out once Japan started producing cheap gear, and we still seem to have a higher proportion of (now collectible) '70s-era Japanese effects around here than most other countries.

I haven't seen the guitar yet, but the case was made in the same part of Sydney that MI Audio effects are produced today. Back then, Maton would have been the only local guitar manufacturer of note. They've always made great instruments.

What is this thread? Some kind of freemason initiation ceremony?

Its like an x-files episode trying to find any info on W.h Stamford.

Is a link really so hard to post?

I'm not rea computer savy, all I did was type in google .ca on my web browser and then I typed in W.H. Stamford in the space and all that came up was the reference to the Fender Forum entry and a list of unrelated stuff.Maybe Wikipedia might have something.
