Hey all,

I was just reading some history on Frank Zappa. Sadly, I have never really taken time to listen to his music and composition but I do remember that in my younger days I heard "Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar" and it had a profound affect on me.

I need to start listening to Frank and his works. Any thoughts on what albums would be a good start for me?

Let me know......

Beaubs

Zappa vs the mothers of prevention is a decent amalgamation of tunes.

I saw Vinny Colaiuta when he was drumming for Frank and saw him again earlier this year with Jeff Beck.

Apostrophe is a great album!

I asked Dweezle where he started when putting together ZplaysZ.He said he listened to everything Frank had.He picked what he thought were the most significant works. They include songs from the original mothers, the Flo and Eddie years ,songs from the movie 200 motels, and then later when the music took on a jazz fusion sound ,I call them the George Duke years. And then on . Recommended listening ,Unmidigated Audacity, Just another band from LA, Live at the Filmore, definitly Apostrophy,Jazz noise made here, does humor belong in music. Just to name a few.

When I started learning how to play in earnest in 1986, I bought this album because I had a list of guitarists I felt I should become familiar with. Back then I listened to it slightly dutifully, but random bits of The Jazz Discharge Party Hats and The Dangerous Kitchen have popped into my head sporadically over the years. It's a good album, and nikininja is the first person I've heard mention it in all that time! Somehow it tends to get left off the list when vintage Zappa is discussed. From memory it appeared to contain more synclavier than guitar, so perhaps that's why.

It's hard for me to pick one album, but Roxy and Elsewhere really hits the spot for me. Chunga's Revenge, Bongo Fury and One Size Fits All rank toward the top for me as well. And don't forget Burnt Weenie Sandwich. :)
