I'm a big nirvana fan, there my favourite band. And as this topic's name says, i would just like to pay a tribute to the greatest song writter, one awesome guitar player and an energetic vocalist (in my opinion).

R.I.P Kurt cobain

Before I had even heard of nirvana, i liked rap, hip hop, you know stuff thats not even music. But in 06, i was listening to the radio and a song called heart shaped box came on, by nirvana. I had no clue that the heavily distorted guitars, sloppy type playing even excisted. I looked into them and instantly they became my favourite band.

I get that you like them man, thats cool. I don't though.

It is 18 years to the day since the passing of Freddy Mercury. A true singer who was grateful to be alive.

Welcome to the forum.

My opinions on Kurt:

Great songwriter? yes
Great Guitar player? a big, huge NO
Great singer? kinda
Great father? another big, huge NO

I have no respect for Kobain at all. He was a great songwriter, I'll admit but his singing and guitar playing were horrible. IMO, there were probably a lot more talented people out there who deserved the fame and fortune that he abused. If he didn't want to be famous, then maybe he never should have signed a recording contract to begin with. Maybe then, he'd probably would still be alive today.

I agree.

Sorry, never liked him as a musician or songwriter period. I won't get into bashing the dead even by their own hands or possibly someone else's.

Sorry guys but I am with CC on this one. Anyone who has it all and does what he did...gets no sympathy from me....I have seen far too many good men die giving freedom to others that this guy just doesn't deserve any memoriums...JMO

I like Cobain, although he does seem childish in many of his interviews. I love his lyrics and I love his riffs. Novoselic can jam on the bass and every drummer they had was a badass (Dale Crover, Chad Channing, Grohl). I may be biased because I play grunge with a hint of blues, but I am a Nirvana freak. Having said that, I also like the Melvins, Green River, Tad, and Mudhoney. I definitely prefer Nirvana while on the Sub-Pop label and prefer late 80s grunge, which I think is different from grunge after Nevermind came out. There is a certain rock purity that comes from the late 80s seattle scene and I like it!

i tend to agree with most of the post in this thread, however kurt cobain obviously suffered from mental illness...most likely he was a manic depressive. also, he had a serious problem with herion and other drugs. i don't agree with what he did to himself...but i do beleive that he was mentally ill and needed serious psychological help.

if you have ever known anyone that is suffering from some form of mental illness it is real and just as serious as physical illness.

i guess i am tired of reading post that are so sanctimonious in tone.

give the guy a break...he was mentally ill...that's why he killed himself.

as far as his music...he was a great songwriter and live he seemed to have that raw, soulfoul, and unpredictable energy that is a big part of rock and roll.

I understand he was mentally ill and god bless the guy but there are people who are going or went through worse than him and get on with it for the sake of their baby daughter.

I also hate that him and that talentless transvestite he married were on junk when she was pregnant. I think that's awful. I think it's even worse that fans think he some amazing human bordering on Jesus territory.

John Lennon was amazingly talented but most people know he was a d1ck. Same with Axl and many others, Elton John for example.

I do believe his music had that raw energy, it's just not my cup of tea at all.

But I would never say he was the greatest guitarist.

Hey guys, this is a tribute topic, not a haters. So if you want to start bagging him out for the music he made, go somewhere else! And you shouldn't bag people out because of the music they made, they like it, other people like it, so why the hell should you go off and say, "oh this musics not even music" or whatever.
Kurt played what he wanted, so everyone should respect that. I'm not saying they should like his music, but come on pay some respect.....

"Hey Kurt, thanks for the tunes, oh and your daughter could of used a father."

How thoughtless and selfish.

The guy was a very talented songwriter and though I was no fan of grunge at all I liked Nirvana. Heart Shaped Box still makes the hair on my arms stand up. The guy never acted or spoke about being a great guitar player which he was not. But he was everything Rock and Roll is about and played that way.

No one here was in the guys shoes and it was more than just the fame that caused him to kill himself. Just about everyone of our guitar heros from Elvis to Hendrix to Clapton to Vanhalen have been strung out during a period of there lives.I give it to the guy because he did have talent and it was not his fault that the record companies went out and farmed anyone near the Seattle area that could barely play three chords and gave them a record contract.

Lets face it the most talented players of that time cut there own throats by writing the sh!tiest songs possible about partying allnight or getting a hummer in a car not the most cerebral stuff. Great Bands like Guns and Roses, Vanhalen,Ozzy, SRV, or Metalica had no problem surviving with grunge as they stood true to what they started out as. But it was a sorry site to see very talented bands try to downplay there skills and try to become a grunge band.

Also I will never forget how guitar magazines sold out to sell magazines and just about shunned anyone that had chops in favor of guys who did not even tune a guitar. Yes I save back issues and have boxes full from that period and how they made it sound like a crime to solo. There were no solos because most of these guys could not play. And all the lessons on drop D tuning and playing on the low three strings please.

Though it is not my favorite music everyone can thank the metal players for keeping it real and bringing the solo back to rock. Because all the kids that grew up on Grunge had no clue about soloing, but the metal movement kept the technical aspect alive.

It's great that you like him. He doesn't suck and yes he had problems.

But.....I don't respect him.

With that said I'll kindly bow out of your tribute page.

Kurt was a d1ck who couldn't play guitar and dumbed down music and was a selfish coward who left his daughter.

Now I'll bow out. :D
