Totally agree Shnep dude. Just think there's a difference between style and era that should be defined clearer. Especially when hunting for definition bro.

I agree -- it's all about the semantics!

Same way if you heard an orchestra play a 'classical' original piece. It's contemporary......but classical.

Just my 2 cents.

Cheers boys.

I like your take on this.

I agree with the concept that it is a style as by the early to mid 80s a lot of cheesy sounding synths were incorporated in to rock music that gives that era a very dated sound. In fact more early to mid 80s music sounds dated than 60s and 70s rock because of that cheesy synthesizer. But there was some great guitar music in the 80s that make it a very important decade for rock in my book.

+1 Right on the money. Pretty much any rock between the 60's and 1980.

hmm my definition of classic rock is hendrix, grandfunk railroad, cream, deep purple, led zeppelin. mainly all the old school bands back in the 60's that made a name for themselves in the rock world.

When "Purple Haze" was heard in elevator music format in the NBC Tower in Chicago a few years ago, this picker wanted to cry.

In this opinion, the true Classic Rock era ended about 1971-2.

Regardless of the album release date, it's Zeppelin and they originated in the 60's and are therefore Classic Rock :D

Here's a thought:

The person writing the history books will change things to suit them selves.
So whatever they "define" classic rock to be will be the way it is, no matter what others that lived through the infancy of rock might know to be true.

Example:
What we listened to as "Rock-N-Roll", which would be the "classic" early form of rock to this old person, has been redefined to be now known as Rock-A-Billy. Elvis Presley was known for some time as "The King of Rock and Roll", not "The King of Rock-A-Billy". Bill Haley is another example of the same thing.

After reading many of the comments - It appears that whatever was popular during a persons teen years is their own "Classic Rock" era.

To me, growing up in the time frame I did - The Ventures songs would be included as "Classic Rock" also.

Twenty years from now, some will view what is popular today as "Classic Rock".

Just a different view, and maybe some food for thought.
