Recently I have been trying to get in a band again. I have contacted a few people who play classic rock. I get some of their set lists and to me some tunes are not classic rock. I see stuff like Roxy Roller, Could've Been a Lady, Working for the Wekend Rebell Yell etc. I guess I'm just older now, but does the term classic rock mean songs 25+ years old? My interpretation of classic rock or at least its golden age would be 1967-1977. Hendrix, Cream, Zep, Deep Purple etc.
What do you guys consider to be classic rock?

My line of demarcation has always been Eric Clapton's Slowhand album, which was released in November of 1977. I don't consider anything after that to be classic rock.

Just my opinion, but it works for me. 8)

The Term "Classic Rock" is flexible and depends on the demographic of your audience.

For me "Classic Rock" means 60's and 70's Bands.

For a lot of my younger friends "Classic Rock" means bands that came to popularity in the 80's.

Pay attention to the Muzak being played in the grocery stores. 60's and 70's classic rock is starting to show up more and more (which I think is flipping hilarious) it used to be the music of rebellious youth, now it's played in the supermarket.

It all depends on your age, those 60's and 70's bands will soon be relegated to "Oldies" status.

I consider 'classic rock' to be any album-oriented (and usually guitar-centered) rock from the late 60s through mid 80s.

If I had to bookend the era, I'd consider the Beatles 'Revolver' to be the beginning (that album seemed to mark the end of their moptop, 'Yeah Yeah Yeah' phase -- it was also around this time that the band stopped touring) and Guns 'n' Roses 'Appetite for Destruction' to be the end (this was probably the last great rock album to be made before Nirvana and the whole Seattle thing got underway).

It's funny how definitions of musical genres can change over time. When I was a kid, 'oldies' radio stations usually played 50s and 60s music -- now they seem to play mostly 70s and 80s tunes.

It might be an age thing.

To me, what I call "Classic Rock", is now called rock-a-billy by many people these days.

Like Chuck Barrys stuff, Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran, Richie Valens - those were some real rock and roll artist. Especially when compared to what came just before them.

But ... as they say ... Just IMHO. :D

I would say that the soundtrack from Dazed and Confused epitomizes classic rock.

I would consider my own band and my friends bands to be Classic Rock considering thats what we play and we have regular reviews in Classic Rock magazine. I think it's a style, NOT a time.
Same way if you heard an orchestra play a 'classical' original piece. It's contemporary......but classical.

Just my 2 cents.

Cheers boys.

That's fair enough. But I think you can still define a Classic Rock 'era' just like you define a Baroque era or a Big Band era. And for me, that period of time would probably be late 60s through mid 80s. :)

Totally agree Shnep dude. Just think there's a difference between style and era that should be defined clearer. Especially when hunting for definition bro.
