Gents (and Ladies),

With Christmas around the corner I'm starting to get the question "RickyD, what do you want for Christmas?"

Well, since I really don't expect anybody to spring for the Custom Shop Snakehead Tele I really want, the next best thing would be some books.

Here's what I'd like - some good biographies. Of course the history of Fender. I'd like to get some on the history of rock, iconic bands and individuals; the Stones, Beatles, Clapton, etc.

Some others would be the history of MoTown, the Blues, etc.

You all get the idea...

I can rat around on Amazon all day and see a lot of great titles, but you all have read a bunch of these. Please - give me your best suggestions...

Thanks!

RickyD

Currently reading Ronnie Woods autobiog', that mans had some "intresting times".

The Hendrix book by Sharon Lawrence is a fave of mine. As is Lemmy's autobiog', that one could cause your toes to curl.

I strongly recommend the ultimately tragic tale of Phil Lynott though (A lad from west bromwich did you know CC). The biggest loss to the music industry ever in my opinion.
There's this one written by his mum (ouch at the price)

And the more wallet friendly. Though more accurate, perhaps less passionate book.

I met Phil's Mum in The Belfast Guitar Emporium on the day of a book signing.

The Ronnie Wood books great isn't it? Although when you say interesting times it's like a Disney movie compared to Mr Slash Hudson's.

Hi Ricky: well I've had Who Are You: The Life of Pete Townshend by Mark Wilkerson on my "to get" list for ages. If you pick that one up please let me know if it is worth it!

Away from biographies a book I get stupidly much enjoyment from is Hand Made, Hand Played: The Art and Craft of Contemporary Guitars by Robert Shaw. A beautiful large format book about top-end guitars, from big company custom shops to the wildest outposts of one-off small builders. Fabulous photos and most of the info you require on each instrument. A lot to look at!

Not expensive: tons of fun (depending on taste, of course).

Cheers - C

ask for "Martin Scorcese's: The Blues"

It's a 7 disc set of dvd's about the history of the blues. Really good stuff.

This is one of the best books that I've ever read...period. A real eye opening look into the music biz and how bands survive or die.

I read Claptons Auto, it was very interesting. Many details of his youth and when he was up and coming. Overall it was a pretty good book.

There is a book coming out in time for Christmas about the Travelling Wilbury's. It is written entirely by members of the band. Should be a very interesting book.

Honestly, I've never read a biographical book about anyone related to music so I am of no help to you in this particular area.

I will recommend this though: The Complete Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It will keep your mind stimulated and believe it or not, once you really start getting into it, it's tough to put down.

That sounds like a good read.
