When I was in the Service, Warrant Officers were chosen from among the Enlisted personnel who had many years of experience in a rather singular, most in demand skill. Others would come into the service already having this kind of background and even at that, this wasn't an automatic entitlement by any means. In your particular situation, fresh out of HS and with (I presume) marginal or no helicopter flying skills, I don't see the criterion being there at all. As far as the ASVAB goes, unless you get some kind of pre-enlistment contract guarantying your MOS, regardless of what you scored highest on or even want, the Army is going to put you where they need you the most at that time. I urgently recommend you verify your information as recruiters flat out lie. As a matter of fact, your first hour of your first day in BCT, a DI will be more than happy to tell you this rather forcefully, sarcastically and with all belittlement. Further, they will reinforce this on you too that in the military, there is no such thing as you going to speak to 'someone' about a 'misunderstanding'. As my DI once said, the military is a place where you give up all your civil rights to fight for the preservation of everyone else's.

Think real hard about all this.

thanks a lot for the info and recommendation. i actually haven't talked to a recruiter yet, and have gotten a lot of information from several sources on the internet. (lots and lots of sources) there's a program called High School to Flight School that supports people fresh out of high school with an aspiration to become an army helicopter pilot. I'm very confident with this, and will do what i need to to fly.

no matter what happens, i will serve anyway, even if i'm stuck as infantry. i'm planning on going through college later on and doing ROTC to become an officer. most likely i'll be going career.

Well, i'm gonna finish up high school while studying hard for the ASVAB and getting in shape. I need to get over 110 on the test to become a Warrant Officer because I want to fly a chopper.

I know it won't be easy, but I really want this, so I'm sure i can do it. Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated. I need all of it I can get. So anyway, wish me luck! :D

jr91, best of luck in everything you do Bro! I was USAF so I gotta ask; have you thought about the USAF? They always need good people and they have those screamin' jet helicopters, then you could earn some money, do a great thing for your country, learn cool new stuff and go really really fast! Sound good?

well, i considered it, and i was wanting to do that since i was little. there's just something appealing about flying through the air at 900mph.

however, the chances of actually becoming a USAF pilot are slim to none. last year, 300 people signed up, went through training, and only 3 became actual pilots.

but i'm likin' where i stand right now, and refuse to change my mind.

but thanks for wishing me luck, and i respect your service to our country.

yeah whatever man. i'm not afraid to die, and if i do, i'll be glad to do it for my country. that's simply asking too much for some people. i know where i'm going when i go, and i don't care what other people think.

i just ask that you show a little more respect to those who have died, and are currently risking their lives to secure YOUR freedom and American rights.

thanks buddy :D

I'm actually an SB2(SWCC/SW), Naval Special Warfare Combatcraft Crewman Second Class. I just finished a deployment in the Gulf of Aden dealing with Somalian pirates, have done 18 months in Iraq's brownwater in the last 3 years with SBT-20 and as the boat detachment for Seal team 5, and when I was a Fire Controlman I did a deployment doing plane guard for Eisenhower Strike Group 8.

Yeah, I think I have earned the right to make a few jokes.

OK Francis relax...LOL(a little Stripes humor there) I am currently in ,stationed at FT Benning GA and have several tours in Iraq as an Infantry Officer. If there is anything that I can do to help let me know. PM me your address and I will send you the study guides we have for the ASVAB and FAST tests. For PT to get in shape I will send you the program I have my Soldiers do prior to Air Borne and Ranger school...it is successful and is a common sense appraoch to fitness...:)

I am from Serbia, so I too know what war is. I know that there are some of you that will try to prove me wrong, and that you think I don't have the right to share my feelings about this. But, I'll tell you anyway.
It's all bullshit! I am 24 years old, and I still haven't served in the army, and I don't plan to! We have all been growing up with that same old stupid stories about honour, respect and all similar crap that serving in the army supposedly brings. It's nothing more than plain $@!&! When I was 18 I enlisted, but I got out of it the very next day, and I don't plan on going and losing time. We cannot really choose as you guys can, it's either you serve with weapons or you serve the so called "civilian" in a hospital, or some other institution or some other place without wearing uniforms. So, either way, it's a waste of time! You don't need to die for some stupid idea. But, that's just me! I only enlisted because I had a fight with my parents (because they wouldn't let me study music;which I did privately anyway, so I think it was a justified cause)) and thought that was a way of making them feel bad. But I have friends that have that urge and feelings about serving, and they think they are tough or mucho men. And most of you know what my country went through because of that stupidity! And I have friends, cousins that were fighting in war, so I think you don't need that in life!
All I wanted to do all my life was just play and compose music!
The bottom line is, you don't need to enlist to become a helicopter pilot.
Thanks for understanding.
Wish you all the best!

Goranm -- The only thing I will point out here is that your frame of reference being from a small war-torn religous country is totally different than the OP.

j_rockr91,

Thank you for considering service in the Army. I was an enlisted, and a non-commissioned officer (medic) for almost 9 years in the Army before getting out. My only suggestion is to make sure you have in writing what it is you are going to be doing in the Army. There is an old saying, if it is not written, it never happened. Study for both tests and do the best you can. Get extremely good at physical fitness as the Army loves to stay fit and run you till you puke (lol). I have very fond memories being in the Army. I got out to go to college and somehow got diagnosed with Asthma while out. Now I can never return as I had planned. Best of luck to you and your endeavors.

+1 Great advice RK!! I have seen far too many kids who did not get anything in writing and were made promises and well...they got the short end of the stick. As I told him I will do anything I can to help him. I had 10 years enlisted before I took my commission, so I have been on both sides fo the fence...

Jake -

I spent 23 years in the USAF flying as a navigator on the K-135. Serving our country was the biggest honor of my life.

I support you 100% in what you want to do!

Do yourself a favor - listen to airbornestrat and take him up on what he's offering you. He's throwing you a great opportunity to let you know what you need to do to prepare yourself physically and mentally. He's living that Army stuff everyday. He's your most current source about what's going on in the Army. He'll be square with you where some of the recruiters may be painting a too rosy picture.

You'll get one honest shot at the ASVAB and the FAST. Neither takes a rocket scientist, but you do need to get the study guides and get yourself prepared.

airbornestrat can also fill you in about the Warrant Officer programs. I spent 5 years of my career as an Air Liaison Officer to the US Army Artillery School at Ft Sill teaching Close Air Support and air/ground integration on the battlefield to young Army, USMC and allied officers and WO's. There are plenty of opportunities for you as a WO - don't be afraid to grab one of them. The 5 years I lived and worked with the Army was a pretty positive experience. I have a lot of respect for my Army brothers. I know their capabilities. I wear my Army jump wings as proudly as I wear my Air Force navigator wings.

If you want to talk about flying careers in the different services, PM me, we can talk. Your 3 out of 300 numbers for USAF flight training success are a bit (a lot) dramatic. There are plenty of opportunities to fly with Navy and Marine aviation as well.

Listen to the vets on this board. We've all got different experiences with our service. For me, it was the smartest thing I've ever done. I'm sure airbornestrat, troublecall and the other guys who retired or plan to retire with 20+ years will tell you the same. There are other guys here who served as well and as proudly that had different experiences, some not so good. Listen to their stories too.

Anyway - Rock On little brother - I support you in what you want to do!

RickyD

What makes you think we are a religious country? Or that we are war-torn?
It's propaganda and politics. I just posted my opinion on the topic, I didn't want to make anybody feel bad or offended.
You can't fight the whole world. Big countries have always dictated and made everything to their specs, so there is no point in doing that. But, there is a limit to everything.
In reverse to your opinion of my "frame of reference", I must point out that you come from a very, very big country and that your frame of reference is very much different too. Obviously, your country can almost do whatever you want, so it's very much on the loose. What I want to say is that you are all over the world, playing around and not really thinking about other people at all. Again, we are just exchanging opinions, nothing else. We are not that war-torn as you think. Propaganda is an incredible weapon. More sophisticated than all fire weapons together. Believe me. You would be surprised if you came to Serbia and found out that it's nothing like you thought it would be. Please do the research. Thank you.

Even though I hate bringing politics into this I have to side with Goranm about Serbia not being war torn. Even though I've never been to Serbia I've been to Slovenjia and Croatia (both countries that had a military conflict with Serbia when Yugoslavia broke up in the late 20th century) in 2008 and you couldn't see anywere that there was a war there in the only 15-20 years earlier. Both of those countries have done amazing things to build up since then (though I've heard there hasn't been much build up in Bosnia, for some reason).
But to j_rockr91 ('91 damn I am getting old) good luck and watch out for yourself out there. There are alot of people people out there that want to hurt you as soon as you put that uniform on, it's a sad world that we live in.

Be safe.
