I was music director twice in two separate congregations in different cites I've lived in. Organized people, wrote arrangements and usually played and sang as well. It's not a fun gig. People won't usually spend the time to rehearse and you're always flying by the seat of your pants. That would be great if it was the same crew each week and you were used to playing with them and could read each other well and communicate musically but in larger congregations there are more musicians who want to play than there are positions to fill so they rotate in and out and it's always a different mix. Training is ongoing and continuous. It gets to be like work.

I think the paint would peel off the walls, if I ever walked into a church.

Nobody goes up in flames for walking into a church. You go up in flames for admitting to be a closet Gibson fan. From THAT there is no salvation.

I have played with the church band and it is like any other band. It's just without much rehearsing and the playlist can change at any moment along with the key that the song is normaly played in. For that reason i choose not to play at church unless i'm doing a special song for the church.

I play in the band at our church, out of about 1500 members we had a core group of 5 of us, 2 acoustic guitars/bass/elec drums/violin and we all sing. Being the same lineup we didn't have to do lots of changing around and we always practice the Wed before a Sunday performance. In fact, if you can't make practice, you don't get to play on Sunday. No winging it or loose improv.

All has been good for a couple years....but now the drummer has a new wife who plays piano, and not very well I might add. She's one of those "music" people who can't vary off a sheet of music, where the rest the guitarists and myself learn by ear and can't even read music. So now we have our first major roadblock, not sure how that one is gonna get resolved.

I play in one of the bands at my church. There are 7 of us. Four singers, (one plays keyboard), a bass player, drummer and two of us on guitar. We usually play the third Sunday of the month and practice every Thursday night. This band generally plays the more upbeat contemporary music that is popular on Christian radio. However, we usually toss in a couple of older tunes in our sets.

Here is us playing a set last month. The sound quality kinda sucks on this recording though:

BTW, I am the one playing the acoustic.

I was in one once...hated it...they were really bogus took songs by the Eagles and put all this "Churhcy" crapy lyrics to it. Sorry don't mean to offend anyone but I am traditional catholic..I like the mass and traditional songs and see ya later...not the long drawn out sermons and crappy music I have heard in some places...JMO
