Or retro-styled muscle cars. I was reading an article about three new and at the same time dying breed of cars. To make the long story short the article compares vintage muscle cars to the current V8 "big 3" power offering.

1971 Hemi Challenger Vs 2009 Challenger R/T
1969 Mach 1 Mustang Vs 2010 Mustang GT
1969 Camaro SS Vs 2010 Camaro SS

Track Results:

1971 Hemi Challenger
1/4 mile = 13.6 sec - top speed 105MPH (169km/h)
2009 Challenger R/T
1/4 mile = 13.0 sec - top speed 110MPH (179km/h)

1969 Mach 1 Mustang
1/4 mile = 13.9 sec - top speed 103MPH (166km/h)
2010 Mustang GT
1/4 mile = 13.8 sec - top speed 104MPH (167km/h)

1969 Camaro SS
1/4 mile = 14.7 sec - top speed 99MPH (159km/h)
2010 Camaro SS
1/4 mile = 13.0 sec - top speed 111MPH (179km/h)

The article mentiones that the new ones are more "reliable"
and have "better" fuel consumption numbers not published.

Whatever the improvement is I am not sure if they were going
for "if ain't broken..." or it was just can't do any better.

Still seems to be fun to to have any of these. With the price of
fuel they might not last much longer.

I've got a '69 Mustang in my garage, but it's just a 302 coupe..
Turns heads, tho.

It's in the way, actually.

Old Mustangs have a way of getting peoples attention. My 67 and my 68 get looks and questions all the time.

Just wanted to note-the top speeds referred to here are trap speeds at the end of the track. These cars all have much higher top speeds.

I'm a huge fan of the Camaro and think I will eventually own one of the new ones, (I'm waiting for the white ones). In the past I have had an 81' Z 28 Camaro with the cowl induction and a 75 Firebird with the 400 engine. I miss not having a good sports car. The Mercedes E350 my wife drives just doesn't cut it.

"Pony Cars I've owned:

1967 Mustang coupe
1970 Mach 1 Mustang

1967 RS Camaro
1968 Z28 Camaro

All fun to drive and own.

I'm currently driving a 2000 Mustang GT with the following minor modifications: Cold air intake, 70mm throttle body and poished intake plenum, High Flow Catalytic converters and 2 inch pipes through Magnaflow exhaust.

It "hauls butt" and I get 22 mpg (I actually checked and calculated it based on my fuel consuption over a 3 month period). If you are worried about the price of gas a car that looks good and "scoots" probably isn't for you. Fuel efficient cars are just too bland for me in both appearance and performance.

Yes of course the new rides are quicker. There's been more than 40 years of technological advancement since the 60's. 40 years!!! My question and the ONLY question of any relevance is WHY are the new cars only marginally quicker? You'd think by now with all the scientific advancements we'd have pony cars that do the quarter in under 8 and still get 100 MPG while doing it. The truth is, the pony cars of the 60's were DECADES ahead of their time and it's only now, 40 years later, that we can improve upon the performance of those days. And THAT is one of the many reasons why muscle cars from the 60's are still so highly revered. We think we've come so far but we haven't. Technology only improves certain aspects of a product. Those aspects rarely stir the soul. Think about that. People still want their '69 Camaros and their '57 Srats. Why is that? Me? I want a '55 Belair hardtop or a '59 Caddy. Do I care that a 2009 Z06 'Vette performs better?

LOL!! Think about it. It'll come to you.

Yes I like the old ones and the new ones. I hope to get a car one of these days but it would probably be something more affordable than cool. Until then I'll keep riding the bus or train to gigs except when the Bros in MrSolarcoaster want help with the gear, then I get to ride with them in the van or truck.

I own a 2002 Camaro. I do like the new ones although I haven't gotten to test drive one. I was really hoping Pontiac would put one out, like a 2010 Smokie and the Bandit Edition Trans Am.

Like 'em all new and old. I had a '69 Nova SS350, spec'd the engine out to that of the LT1 350 'Vette engine. those were the good old days from the standpoint you could run up to the corner parts store, or Chevy dealer, and get what ever you needed. Of course that was part of the problem something was always breaking. If the engine and tranny held up the car would rust before your eyes. I've got a Boxster now. But my retirement gift to myself will be a Corvette.
