I thought "smart wood" was what they made the robot guitars out of...

Well I bet that Gibson is the only one who has any trouble over this whole wood situation. I bet a lot of companies had the furnaces working overtime the last few days.

This is really sad, as Gibson and Fender are the two Icons in Musical instruments.

So does this mean, all Gibson made instruments will suddenly go up in price and instant collectables? I wonder what kind of ebony fingerboard was used for the classic white les paul studio.

I hope not, but it can drive prices up as production may cease temporarily for investigation if Gibson is formally charged. That will for sure drive up prices. I think with this raid and confiscating expensive tone woods for the higher end les pauls may drive all ready in the market Les Paul 50s, 60s reissues as well as signature les pauls.

Well, They may have gotten caught using rare quality wood on high quality guitars. How dare they screw the consumer in such a manner.

Brought to you by the Coalition of Proper Wood Use

Even though I am primarily a Fender guy I hate to see anything bad happen to Gibson. This thing could definitely have a negative effect on the guitar manufacturing industry. I really hope they dont find any wrong doing on Gibsons part.

Who knows this could lead to Gibson using cheaper woods and laminates which would lower the prices of a Gibson guitar. Then again the prices could stay the same and most people would'nt know the difference. Just one more reason to keep on with Fender products.

I'm pretty sure the law and common sense would side with the purchaser in that case Jay. After all the onus is on the prosecuter to prove guilt on the part of the buyer. They have to prove the buyer willingly bought a guitar made from illegal wood and was informed of its status prior to purchasing.

In other words

Gibson salesman: Hey kid wanna buy this guitar made out of endangered wood, thats protected by enviromental welfare bodies worldwide. 30 lemeurs used to live in this wood, now their dead.

Kid: Hell yeah, then lets go shoot some rhino's.

Also what would the authorities do with such a guitar once confiscated? Its not like they can collect all the bits of wood together and rebuild them into a tree. They'd only burn it, ultimately adding to enviromental problems.

Gentlemen, take a stroll around your local lumber yard. If it's anything like mine you will find C.I.T.E.S. certificates and statements conspicuously displayed, various impressive looking ink stamps on the end-grain of imported timber and all manner of other things.

So can I prove that the piece of Iroko I bought from the off-cuts corner comes from a renewably managed source? Can I heck.

I recently bought some acoustic guitar sides and backs from a respected tonewood supplier. I was told they are sycamore grown in my own country. Are they? How do I know? Can my supplier always be sure either?

Short of going and watching the trees felled it's amazingly hard to be stand-up-in-court certain on this stuff. Interestingly, I recently read that this is exactly how Bob Taylor does indeed source his Koa. Now there's dedication!

Cheers - C

I'm not really a eco-conscience person, but I don't damage it either, I wonder why more businesses that want to use scarce products like woods wouldn't just grow them. I know that it would take 20 or 40 years but if they would've started back in the early days of dwindling amounts they could have done it. I'm also aware how ridiculous it is to tell someone from the 40s' or 50s'...."hey plant a tree because you use wood" but it's more like 'if you want it you better be able to supply yourself because it will be gone one day.'. I'm also aware that if they planted trees they would probably never be able to forecast the amount of sales they are having today. Anyways that is my depreciated two cents.
