Dont be suprised if every major manufacturer gets a knock at the door after this.

These people investigate on whats called a carousel method. They get on and just keep going round and round until they dig up everything they can.

Niki is right; government will be looking now, this will affect more than Gibson customers….this may drive up costs on things further as no body wants to get caught buying wood from the wrong people and are sure to be careful in their purchase. Unauthorized dealers = limited supplies and leads to less availability and higher prices.

This will be one to watch.

Cheers
Bill

Sorry fellas..I am a Fender purist...I only play and own Fenders...I love my Strat and my Teles above all...:) But...if this is true it is very sad...I never could bond with Gibbys...they play too mushy for me but I do appreciate their sound.

Well, if they are making all these pricey reissues supposedly to all original specs, Brazilian Rosewood is surely a huge part of the mix.

Knowing Government inspectors, Gibson will be monitored relentlessly until the Government finds a new alleged offender. Yet, once the in-house Government audits slow down (because now, they will NEVER completely stop), the prices will surely go up as Gibson will need a new department with personnel dedicated to fielding all the Government inspectors, forms, checklists, reports, etc. for on-going compliance which by necessity, mandates the creation of new procedures dealing with all this, individuals to oversee it and a dedicated storage section for all the paperwork trails of same which the Government must approve and have access to on demand. And believe me, you can have several inspectors in a room and no two of them will agree on anything.

Many, many more trees are going to be chopped down now as for those who don't know, the Government thrives on abundant and redundant paperwork, usually, "In quadruplicate".

Looking around the net its Madagascarr rosewood thats the problem mateial in this case. Something about endangering Lemuers who live in the trees. Also Its $5000 ft cubic. The blame looks to be on Gibson's german supplier who has been buying wood from a shadey harvester. If thats the case then Gibson aren't at fault. Cynical me cant help but think its instigated by gibson, despite Henry being on the Rainforest preservation board. Still thats just my opinion and completely unfounded.

What I do find intresting is how many other guitar manufacturers bought timber off that supplier. I know if I rang around a few builders saying I've got a load of really dark rosewood going for Indian rosewood prices. I'd likely get my arm bitten off.

On a semi-related ethical matter from our earlier 'philosophical' comments, remember, "Every man has his price." Consequently, I'm sure that given the right circumstances, you'd eventually find a most receptive ear.

I know Martin makes a couple of its high end marquis and limited runs with Madagascar Rosewood, because up until now it was the closest thing to Brazilian rosewood you could get >_>

My Fellow Fenderites,

I am sure that Gibson’s high ranking officials did not know where their distributer for their Rosewood actually got their wood from. This is called plausible deniability...they will now. As mentioned by another person, this will cause them to have a watch dog on staff to ensure their wood comes from “Smart Wood” sources only. I foresee a Gibson price hike after this. Now is the time to get that Gibson you wanted before the prices really get high.

Exactly ,,,,,,that's why I own a bunch of FMI and one Gibson SG.....lol.
Don't get me wrong , I like some of their stuff, but SH** it is over priced for what you get. Not worth the mark up either.
It's just paying for a name.
