that is the question. I ordered my custom engraved neck plate and I was wondering who here has replaced theirs themselves? I don't want to fudge it up, my buddy said to me "Take it in to the shop and they'll do it", so I thought "Really, how hard could this be? all I am doing is loosening the strings to the point that there's no tension on the neck, turn it, unscrew, take off plate, I'm not really curious to the point that I need to take the neck off so I proceed to take the new black washer, custom plate and new strings and screw it on, not that hard, and I'm gonna pay someone to do that?" it didn't seem to me like rocket science.
Can anyone tell me why I should take it to a shop? Did you do it yourself? did you run into problems by doing it yourself?

TIA

It's a piece of cake. loosen all the strings (or take them off) then loosen the four bolts and remove, neck should be snug in pocket and stable, replace with new neckplate and fasten screws again.

Do it. If you mess up, take it in, in all humility. But unless you remove the neck from the body, there's little that can go wrong.

Good luck.

There is a very good chance that the neck is so tight and snug in the pocket that it's not going to move at all.

i think if you have to ask then maybe you are better off letting someone else do it for you.

Here's my tip:

Place a capo at the first fret to prevent the loosened strings from flopping around and coming out of the tuners.
