Location: Peckham: where the snow leopards roam
[Friday] Now then: just bumping this thread because last night I had the honor of being driven by a Somali/Somalian taxi driver (well I do live in Peckham after all).

Naturally, this thread came to mind so I questioned that gentleman closely.

He confirmed that the Somali currency is indeed the Shilling, though he doubted strongly that a sea container full of it would carry any significant value. He himself volunteered the view that the country no longer had any government body capable of issuing currency in any form. He said that "fake" currency was a massive problem in Somalia.

I did ask him whether lapel badges/pins in the approximate shape of guitars might be tender in Somalia and he thought it quite possible. Along with chickens, bullets and phone sim cards. He said that car tires with plenty of wear left on them were a handy and readily transported form of large denomination cash.

So look out your guitar pins, guys. You may be wealthy in Somalia.

BTW: that taxi driver treated me to a great deal of music on a remarkably hissy cassette tape by a Somali "guitarist" named Gaitu. Take it from me, it is NOT essential that you pursue this fellow's music...

Cheers - C

stratoBobster, I can assure you that I am not some rube who believes everything he encounters on the internet. I first ran across these in a reputable coin catalog, and they are indeed legitimate. As I mentioned before, there are many unusual commemorative coins and stamps on the market. These are produced primarily for their collectible value rather than for circulation, and many of these are indeed issued by the Somali Republic.

See Joel Anderson World Coins and Fleur-de-Coin for additional information.

I have no intention of buying these coins. I merely posted them here because I thought people might find them interesting.
