I'm reading a song in The Standards Only version of The Real Book. The song is It Had To Be You.

I'm having difficulty reading the song.

There is a verse section at the beginning, which has two lines of lyrics.

Then there is the chorus.

However, there is no repeat sign or Da Capo to go back to the second line of lyrics in the verse section.

How do I read that?

If I just read it as I understand music reading, I would play the verse first, then play the chorus, and repeat the chorus (because there is a begin repeat marker at the beginning of the chorus and an end repeat marker at the end of the chorus.)

Thanks for any help you can give me!

Hi Rudy, I like the chord progression on this one. It makes for some cool soloing and use of phrasing.

This is the way that I've been doing it (the form, that is, different key) :

Once through with vocals, then once with instrumental/solo, then finally once through with vocals again. You can put a cool 'tag' on that last line too to accent the kick drum.

No tab is 100% perfect, it is just as easy to forget to put in the repeat dots as it is to write in the wrong note. Listen to your ears, they'll tell you where to go.
