so once again i was watching that metal show on VH1 Classic and they once again brought up a good point, most of the classic rock bands that are around are starting to fade (i.e. Aerosmith) do you guys think that there are any bands that can fill big arenas like AC/DC or Aerosmith? I say that I think there are some new bands that are capable. A handful can do it.

I am worried a little that 'the powers that be' are trying to squash rock and roll again, I really don't like it when they do this 'cause I can't listen to the stuff they call popular or mainstream or pretty much anything I have heard while searching for a channel to listen, to me its all like nails being dragged along a chalk board I don't even want to think about the talking disaster rap or hip hop that they have been force feeding the young, how horrible it has been for them.

Not to sidestep what I presume is more a bands popularity question on your part, please consider too, for us old farts who used to have the money to continue selling out Aerosmith, AC/DC, etc, etc, venues, are for the most part now, living paycheck to paycheck. If our bills and the general cost of living weren't ever increasing and our paycheck ever shrinking, we'd probably still be going to a lot more concerts than the little or none we can afford today. My point is, there are a LOT of antecedent conditions with the aforementioned being merely a one which factors into why bands fades out aside from popularity. Oh, and let's not forget, the money we shell out to our kids so they can go to their concerts for example, factors into our shrinking finances too. We just try not to burden our kids with such things.

Nah this is just a cycle of music trend. It happens every now and again. Disco, punk, electro, grunge, indie, house/rave, depression (think coldplay and James Blunt (is that rhyming slang?)). You could put metal or rock inbetween every one of them and have a rough timeline of music since 72.

Metal and rock always evolve and bounce back. You may not like what it evolves into but it'll be back. Just like Arnie S

Well the powers that be have been trying to squash out rock for sometime as all you have to do is put on MTV to see what they want you to listen to. A lot of bands that can still sell out large venues will continue to do so and those who cant will throw 3 or 4 bands say from the 80s on a bill and tour together.

No, I don't think there is one true band of the new school guys who can fill arenas the way the bigger name bands used to. None of the new music that is currently out even appeals to me like that, and I just can't think of one band that can carry the torch and keep hope alive for good ol rock n roll. and thats just my honest opinion so no one get riled up.

U2 is one of the current acts that continue to play huge venues, and will probably do so whenever they decide to tour. Although they don't get much mainstream exposure at times, Iron Maiden still continues to pack enormous venues worldwide as witnessed on the Flight 666 Movie that they play on VH1 Classic...And whenever Ozzy tours, its usually a consistent sellout...so there are bands out there that can and will continue to fill up larger-sized venues....

Iron Maiden does a good job filling up arenas, especially when they don't get much radio or tv play. Just look at that "Flight 666 tour" documentary.

I’m sad to say that the Arena rock days are about gone (as a genre) that is…that’s not to say that bands won’t be selling out arenas and that is an important way to bring the music to the masses. I also think there is a different feeling in concert goers these days in wanting a more intimate experience in a show and bands are responding to this with club tours and playing smaller venues.

I think what Eddie Trunk meant by Arena rock was bands that have become huge & cumbersome to the point of needing only to fill arenas..
In the 70’s – 80’s and into the nineties, there were bands that were so popular that playing stadiums and arenas only made sense. Def leppard, AC/DC, Kiss, those types of bands come to town during those decades owed it to fans to play a large venue…so many fans of those types of bands that it was not fair to the fans to play a club. That would leave thousands of fans that did not get to go to a show due to the space of a venue…

I just don’t think fans are in that mind set as much anymore…Economy may have a lot to do with it.. I know myself if someone I want to see comes to town I gotta ask myself if I want to drop a couple hundred bucks to sit in the nose bleed seats to see what I can only discern as dots, while listing to tunes I can hear at home on the cd player..I would rather these days to catch them in the house of blues or another small place where I can see the band.

I don’t think the issue is are the bands arena ready… but are the fans ready to drop hard earned bucks to have the arena experience…..and I believe there are way less fans ready for this then some 20 years ago

Cheers
Bill

Good Riddance.

Arena Rock is dead and buried. It is such a terrible way to see music anyways.

But the fact is that it is easier than ever to be exposed to new music. Arena ROck thrived when your only way of hearing music was radio or Mtv, so 1 in a million bands had any exposure. So unless you invested in a niche scene(punk rock, metal, electronica, etc) and actively sought it, you were only delivered whatever radio/MTV picked up. Now it is easy to get your band exposed and easy to seek out music that speaks to you personally. And I think that is for the best.

Thats a very good point Ceallach.
Arena gigs are not the best way to see a band. The band are very far removed from the audience. Infact anyone 50ft back from the stage watches on the big telly above the stage. Conditions/amenities are never fantastic either. Clubs are far better venues for those reasons. My only problem is that someone say Springsteen, who can charge £100 a ticket and sell out anywhere. If he was to move from arena's where he gets a 50,000 audience all paying £100 a ticket, to playing clubs. How much would he want to play a club and consequently how much would the tickets cost? £5000 maybe?

$@!& that noise too. Springsteen's cool but I'd rather spend $5 for entrance to a show where I can see 7 bands who act like it's a privilege for them to play not a privilege for me to see them.

Which is why my hat's off to Slayer and Megadeth who's upcoming tour is being priced at $10.
