cool. I'm not sure about the depressive type of songs, you can express those ideas or feelings in song just when resolving lyric parts give your self a path to solving the depressive issue, I liked your last one when you wrote "my songs have a key" that key can open any door.

im not really depresed when i write deppresive songs, its just that i have some very horrible memories and i like to write songs about them to get them of my chest.

My songs always start with a title, than I start writing the lyrics, with my guitar or keyboard, mainly with my guitar.

I also have a notepad, pencil and my laptop with The RhymeZone
http://www.rhymezone.com/ loaded.

I keep a list of potential song titles on my PC. It's good for saving ideas and cool phrases. I need to get into the habit of keeping a pad and pen with me.

1962, the question always is, as put so eloquently by the lead singer/lead guitar player in MrSolarcoaster " you've been at this a very long time why don't you have any hits?" usually after I play a new rif at rehearsal. The answer is there are some pretty big gaps during all of this time and this band has been a very good inspiration for me, so , yes you did come up with that because the way you wrote out your idea included all of the words that I used, I didn't add any with quite a few words left for another stanza or two. Because of the way you write you have an advantage over most song writers in that you can write your ideas out in long form and then reorganize those ideas to focus them in a more obvious lyrical way. Some song writers try to write in the lyrical style from the beginning and that can (like smoking is rumored to do to people) stunt the growth of the song. I'm not being critical or disrespectful I'm sure a lot of those writers have had hits were I do not although I keep trying. Just saying that your way is an alternative that works just as well and allows you to change your mind about the song without changing it or having to start over because the change doesn't fit, it always will because you get the idea out first and that is the most important part, yes?

Same here. :)

Thought about (mused?) this Mike and TGS and this:

muse, a source of inspiration to a poet or other writer, usually represented as a female deity, and conventionally called upon for assistance in a poet's invocation. In ancient Greek religion, the muses were nine sister‐goddesses, the daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne (the goddess of memory), who presided over various arts and some branches of learning. Their cult was associated particularly with the Pierian Spring on Mount Olympus, with Mount Parnassus near Delphi, and with Mount Helicon in Boeotia. Their names and responsibilities are as follows: Calliope ( epic poetry); Clio (history); Erato ( lyric love poetry); Euterpe (flute music); Melpomene ( tragedy); Polyhymnia ( hymns); Terpsichore (choral dance and song); Thalia ( comedy); and Urania (astronomy). Later poets of the Renaissance, however, often referred to the women praised in their love poems as muses who inspired their verse; and in modern criticism the term has often been extended to any cause or principle underlying a writer's work.

kind of explains origins of the word and its use although it can be a certain subject or a rainy day all falling under the umbrella of muse or inspiration. Close to it? There is probably a better way of thinking of it, not sure what it is.

I usually just sit down and start with acouple of chords that go nice together and then string together chords that compliment them, then comes the melody and backing riffs and maybe lyrics.

With the schedule I have I can't usually sit down and write a song start to finish anymore. Also, I tend to go back and tweak it and then tweak it some more. Lately, I've started writing lyrics first, very unlike my method when I first got into this. Because I'll go days or weeks without finishing the song I've started, I sometimes forget how the melody goes! Very frustrating. Even when I write the chords downNow I'm shopping for notation software so I'll have the melody, lyrics and song structure all in one file that I can edit easily.
