What I've found over the last 20 years is that when I come across a general melody or riff, I become inspired as to what the actual song is about. When I play the guitar, inspiration comes out of left field. If the music comes from the heart and I feel it, I tend to reflect what events are taking place in my life or where my thoughts have been.

I believe songwriting can have any starting point as alot of people in the forum have suggested. As long as the music is being written, thats what it's all about...Many well known artist have created songs based one note. Read the article about how Hotel California was written. Eric Clapton frequently did the same thing in the past.

Music is Music. There are many levels of writing. I will probably never be a known songwriter however, I am doing it.

Great topic! Thanks

I keep guessing, I must be way off or maybe like our MrSolarcoaster song; I Suck. I was really hoping that to be true in a good way not a bad way. Lyrics? Music? Both? A new girl friend. Thats it! A new girl friend?

this is a very awesome thread my friend. i've written 7 songs in total. i like focusing on the lyrics first because you can forget them especially if they're really good. When i have some really good lyrics pop in my head i write em down immediately. I focus on the music afterwords b/c youre constantly changing the music.

My songs may come from a riff or a chord sequence or from just messing around on my guitar, i never sit down and think a songs going to sound like this. It just comes to me wwithout even thinking. Then as I get a collection of riffs or progressions I just put them together and make a song, with either putting a rythm part behind a riff or a riff over a chord sequence where needed. Maybe thats a bit weird but hey.

I haven't had much time to write anything, but I'm still reading Jimmy Webb's book Tunesmith, Inside the Art of Songwriting.

It must not be, or something. More verses. More, better, verses.

huh i always like to write the music first then head for the lyrics. but its different at times. if u write the music first then you would know what kinda of song its going to be and u would know to write a soft easy going song or a fast paced song.

A conversation you say
I must disagree
I'm too busy writing too busy posting
to busy with things for me

didactic you say
what institution is that
did you graduate? maybe you should go back
Dali was a painter
I'm sorry to be the one to tell you
but, this isn't that

your grammar atrocious
your punctuation is lack
to be brutally honest
your just a hack

so, go talk to yourself
go talk to a tree
go talk to your girl friends underpants
just don't talk to me

I wonder if its easier to be schizophrenic on a mac or a PC?

Solid Body Love Songs wrote:
if you are wearing your guitar, then start with the music, anything will do, if you can't get at your instrument then think of her eyes, the sparkle of excitement as she awakens you with her gaze, her face, forehead brow nose how her lips curl upward as she reaches for your kiss, how her hair falls against her cheeks and down her neck, her body, its curves, the way she walks towards you, her legs, her scent as she brushes against you like she is telling your nose that she wants your touch...... no instrument go with the lyrics.

One may ask ones self "If a picture is worth a thousand words" how can one word evoke tens of hundreds of images? Subject, context.

There is nothing better than coming across some old cassette tape of songs that I had written at different periods. In fact my brother found a tape of four songs I wrote back in 1978 and put them on a CD for me and it was just great to hear them and me at 16 years old and I could even tell by the songs who I was listening to heavy at the time as they were very Buddy Holly, Beatle influenced. I also did not sound that bad singing as I just started smoking at that age. The cool thing is hearing people say how good they were. Most of the time you write and are never happy with what you wrote. Usually you start off loving it then by the time you finish you want to scrap the whole thing. The most important thing to do is let other people here them and be the judge. I used to write and then record it and say it was a song by a band that was an album cut. Then go by the response I got off that as when I was young I was kind of shy to say it was me. But always record, even on a cheap little tape player and sometimes years later you can find a verse, chorus or middle eighth on something new that your stuck on.

i write songs alright, lots of them, but i haven't showed anyone yet cause i think they'll laugh.....anyone got any ideas? Im worried they'll laugh cos my songs have a key: you have to listen to them a couple of times to actually get it. And some of them the meaning is hidden....if you know what i mean. I admit, some of my songs are shocking, but thats just because i started writting songs bout 4 months ago. I need the boost to get me started and thats to show people but i'm to scared. If they like it, that'll make me so happy, but if they hate it, that'll make me feel bad. an i cant take that risk. Plus i think aome of them are a bit personal (i think...), an my friends'll just think," ha ha thats hilarious cause its just a load of bullcrap" or something like that.
