Lately I've been into writing songs, trying to find my own voice among the many out there. I just wanted to ask all you fellow songwriters out there:

It varies from song to song. You never know when inspiration is going to hit you or in which way. I guess I'd say "all of the above" at different times.

if you are wearing your guitar, then start with the music, anything will do, if you can't get at your instrument then think of her eyes, the sparkle of excitement as she awakens you with her gaze, her face, forehead brow nose how her lips curl upward as she reaches for your kiss, how her hair falls against her cheeks and down her neck, her body, its curves, the way she walks towards you, her legs, her scent as she brushes against you like she is telling your nose that she wants your touch...... no instrument go with the lyrics.

As with everything else, the more you do it, the easier it gets and as stated above, when you are in the zone, inspiration can hit you in various ways and at any time.
Sometimes a rhythm jumps into your mind, sometimes a melody.
You start to hear things constantly and more intensely than ever before. I can remember once standing at a bar and a guy was playing on a slot machine at the side of me.
All the noises it made, the clanking, buzzing, bells going off, suddenly had rhythm and the more I listened, the more it made music.
I went off and wrote a song, based on the rhythm and inspiration I got from that machine. Yes, it can hit you in strange ways.
Like the artist who sees things, you will start to hear things.

I've always kinda stumbled across some chord structure and messed about with different rhythms. Then I would play a lead melody over that and base the vocal melody on that or an other alternative melody I had.

Most of the time I collaborate with who I'm working with at the time.

The question was the poll, I forgot on this forum the poll goes above the original post rather than in it ^^ boops

Long ago I had a problem with song writting in that I would come up with one verse and a chorus I liked, and then get stumped. I was making the song writting too much of a personal statement and it just got complicated.

I cured the problem by writting songs from a different perspective other than my own. I used viewpoints I didn't believe in and wrote songs for female singers. It worked for me and I realized that when I finished a song, it was still 100% mine.

I mostly write on guitar, but I also enjoy coming up with whole songs in my head and then learning to play them later. A song can start with anything; a riff a melody, some lyrics. I like to start with chord changes I like as well.

I chose lyrics in the poll because that's what I've been doing lately. Prior to that it was chord progressions. You never know when the muse will visit or what she will bring.

I'd have to say I've finished more songs that started with the lyrics. I've got alot of music that I just can't seem to put words to but I still love to play them. One of them I never intend to and I've played it for 30 years. It called "A New Day" it's evolved but the words have always been in the music
