I say everybody in this forum is fit to change his strings, and he's fit to change theirs. Mayer seems like a nice guy, and it's fun to hear him PLAY the blues, though please don't try to sing it Johnnie Boy!

Mayer has a sense of humor about how reviled he gets online, and also how ridiculously idolized he is. He doesn't try to sell himself as any second coming, just a guy who plays guitar and tries to give folks a great time. He's not about being a number whether it's 1 or 666. No real player is. Just serious about being a good musician and sharing that with the world. That's all any of us can do. Numbers and stats are for fantasy baseball.

I have never really listened to Mayer before. I will have to pick up some of his musci and give it a good listen. I do agree with the Jimi, SRV bit. SRV didn't copy Jimi, he made it his own.

JM stands tall today because he's standing on the shoulders of legends. They're bearing all the weight, they did all the dirty work to interpret and devise and invent. And then have the courage to bring it all to an indifferent world. Jimi, SRV and Clapton were the paddle-ins. Mayer is a tow-in.

So Clapton, Jimi and SRV were totally original and never stood on anyones shoulders? Give me a break. Everyone has influences, shoulders of previous greats that they stand on, learn from and build from. Ask Clapton about Robert Johnson.

Everybody evolves what comes before. Just some guys are true legends because they evolved the state of the art so far, so very far. Mayer merely regurgitates. Big difference.

Exactly, they evolve. Clapton wasn't a legend at first. His early work was a regurgitation of earlier blues pioneers. The legend stuff didn't happen till more then a decade later. SRV's style wasn't innovative, he just played the blues better then most ever have, but it was still straight ahead blues. Jimi was innovative. Mayer is early in his career, he'll evolve too. Maybe someday he'll be a legend. I'd say he has more of a chance at legendary status then all us pundits here.

It's funny, I don't remember anyone bashing SRV for following in the footsteps of Jimi or Eric or Robert Johnson, Buddy Guy....you get my point.
