Since you went through the trouble of reviving a John Mayer thread, here's my opinion.

His heart's in the right place. He want's to be a Bluesman so bad he's loosing sleep, and I admire him for that.

As a Musician and Guiatr player, he just doesn't inspire me. I find his singing is downright annoying, but I can see how someone would like it's character. After all, I like Leon Russels voice.

He gets an A for effort, but if half of his grade is The Final Test, he gets a C+.

P.S. I really like John Mayer's signature Strat, even over Eric Johnsons, Stevie Ray's, Jeff Beck's, or Eric Clapton's (not EC's first sig, that's my holy grail, sort of).

In Mayer's defense, and no I'm not a fan, I'd have to say the blues are simple to play but take a lifetime to learn. He's young. He really just started playing the blues. Give him time and he'll be one of the greats. Life needs to beat you up some before you can put that feelin into yer blues.
Oh yeah, you're right...that singing style is friggin awful. And those facial movements while he sings? Looks like he's having a colonoscopy without painkillers.

True, he hasn't really had a Final Test yet, he's on the righ track. Like Indiana Jones said, "It's not the years, it's the mileage". That's true for musicians as well as Archeologist's.

You're right, what's with the Faces

I'm pushing 40, grew up in the 80's Love SRV and JIMI trying to compare these three is actually funny, totally different., but from what I've heard from Mayer (and I really like him) I hear definite influence from both artists and many others. The great thing about Mayer is that he's ORIGiNAL, talented, an excellent musician and I believe could be great and NOT forgotton easily, dudes got a very bright future.
He's brought a whole new generation back to what us older guys grew up on, and when I see that, I think it's powerful and beneficial to music as a whole. Look at what most of the kids are listening to today... as for the opinions to basically write the kid off before he's had a chance to make his mark is laughable and very short sighted IMO. I think we all know that to get into the biz and become successful you gotta appeal to the masses and I like the fact that his other albums are definitely crossover type stuff but his new one is good and tasty IMO.
He knows his craft, is respected and has IT.
Give him some time he might surprise us.

B

For anybody still doubting Mayer, and I know that there are not as many as I originally thought, check out his most recent Austin City Limits performance. It was absolutely incredible, and I think that it was a huge step towards being even more recognized as a guitar player.

Mayer even said it himself, ACL is where big musical "things" happen. He also said that as music changes and the world gets crazier, the more important ACL has become, and he proves both these points.

I saw the Austin City Limits performance and loved it. He really showed his guitar ability on in this performance as he does in all his live performances. This was a great show.

The ACL performance was incredible...The intro to I don't trust myself was freakin amazing...I have a HUGH respect for jimi and stevie ..they were pioneers.. John's licks are definatly influence by these two..But I think john does have bright future... i think the best of him is still headed up his sleeve

I just saw a documentary about Herbia Hancock putting together an album of collaborations with pop musicians, entitled "Possibilities," and one of the popsters was Mayer.

He and Herbie wrote an entire blues/funk tune (called "Stitched Up," about a girl who's got you wrapped around her finger) in the studio in about two hours, words and music, and were laying down monster-chiller-horror rhythm tracks before the day was out.

Despite all the howling online and in guitar stores coast to coast about whether or not John Mayer is or is not a "bluesman," I can safely declare that he not only plays the blues better than 98% of all the guitar players I can think of, there's not a single player on this forum who is fit to change his guitar strings.

More talent in his little finger, etc., etc.

You're all just jealous because he's having sex with all your favorite movie stars. :D

I hate his singing, not his guitar playing. He's a good player, no legend for sure. I've heard guys at Guitar Center trying out amps as good as Mayer. I mean, these guys were monsters of course, but they aren't legends either. It's all in context. Mayer breaks no ground, sets no trends. He regurgitates SRV and Jimi very well. Zzzzzzzzzzzzz.

I had the opportunity to see John Mayer this summer and the show was great. One thing that I found interesting is, about halfway through the show he said "Now that I got the stuff the record company makes sure we do, I can play what I want". From that point on he let loose with the blues!
It was Amazing! I don't know if you can compare him to Hendrix or SRV but I think Mayer is on the right track. I for one am looking forward to his next few albums. It seems each one gets a little closer to what he did with the John Mayer Trio.

Rock On John!!!
