Jimi and SRV were like prophets from heaven sent to save us from Lulu and Bobby Sherman. The faithful were ready to embrace their bold new religion.

Today, I think the public would just crucify a new Jimi or an SRV. Give us more and more of the Barabbas of Gangsta Rap, Britney and the Pat Boone of Blues Guitar, John Mayer. Tutti Frutti indeed.

SRV saved us from Lulu and Bobby Sherman?? You're 20 years off! SRV saved us from Erasure, Depeche Mode, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Cure, et-al.

And in case you forgot, Jimi, The Who, The Rolling Stone, and The Beatles had to share the Pop Charts of the 60's with the likes of The Carpenter, Pat Boone, Nancy Sinatra, et-al. Then the endless onslaught of Imitator Bands like Frigid Pink, Chocolate Watch Band, and Strawberry Alarm Clock must have been annoying. I think you remeber the 60's just a little rosier than they were.

Pop Charts reflect the fickle habits of fad fallowers and fasion hounds. I for one, hate when what I'm doing becomes a Fad.

Bobby Sherman? SRV was 14 when Bobby Sherman was tearing up the pop charts with classics like "Easy Come, Easy Go".

Well if you want to split hairs, it was JIMI who saved us from Lulu and Bobby Sherman, and SRV who saved us from the corporate pop shmaltz, the mind-numbing payola rotation playlists, neo-disco, hair bands, rock ballads not to mention the Music Video Nazism of the MTV era all across the 80's.

It's easy now to back seat drive and recognize these guys for the genius they had. But Jimi had to go to England first to get discovered, then to Monterey Pop. Victorian America wasn't ready for him at all until he got sanctified by the much more forward-looking Brits.

And heck, SRV fought tooth and nail through a thousand blues bars as just another loud blues bender. A real telling gig that got recorded was SRV/DT at Montreaux the first time in '82. They basically got booed off the stage. But Bowie and Jackson Brown picked up on him there. The rest is His Story.

I'm no BAck Seat driver. I've been into SRV since Couldn't Stand The Weather, and I couldn't get any of my friends (with two exceptions) to listen to him. I used to argue with my English Teacher over who was better, Clapton or Stevie. Right after he died, all my friends were suddenly huge fans and my English Teacher was calling him "The Best He Ever Heard". (I'd already Graduated, but it's a very small town).

This is one of the reasons I don't care for Fads, and I don't fallow the Pop Charts, the fickle fallowers that wear thier music like a Swatch Watch. But I do like it when one of thier Pop Stars strays from the formula, like John Mayer. Even if I don't like to listen to him, I like what he's doing.

Mayer IS the formula! Popstar corporate pablum right down the middle. His average fan is female aged 15.7. Britney Spears has older and wiser fans.

But that's his image, his pop culture creation. As a player, he's very talented. It is fun to hear all those Jimi and SRV licks played back over and over like a Roland Space Echo gone mad. Mayer is an entertainer. A very successful one.

But any idea his career will survive past his looks any farther than Christina Aguilera's will is silly.

I'd say those "Jimi and SRV licks played back over and over like a Roland Space Echo gone mad", as you so accuratley and eloquently put it, are driving his record company crazy. That's what I perceive as him straying from the formula. City Love and Gravity and all that syrupy stuff is what the machine wants out of him.

As far as his carreer lasting, I'd say he's destined for a VH1 Thanksgiving special after 20 years out of the spotlight. But he's Driven by the Blues Bug, so I could be wrong real easy.

One more small issue, are you aware that you said that fans of a Skank that Shows the Tabloid World her bare Cooter, Exclusivly Lip Synchs, and is most famous for Neglecting her kids, "Wise"? Are you sure you don't want to retract that statment?

WisE-ER, it's all relative. Mayer seems like a terrific kid, has a good sense of humor about his pop stardom. But will he be "playing da blues" into his 50's and beyond in small clubs like Roy Rogers and Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes will and all the real bluesers like Bonnie Raitt and Buddy and John Mayall etc etc etc?

He'll be too busy with his offshore investments. Then he'll put in cameos at a few "Stars of the Zeroes" revivals and he'll finger-sync his solos. Hey, it's not as cool as "teens" and "twenties", but what're ya gonna do?

And this is where I think we respectfully disagree at the consequence of having nothing more to debate. I think he has more heart than you give him credit for, and I have no means to justify that statement. You don't think he has the heart like all the "real bluesers". And that's your rightful opinion, just like I have mine.

This is the kind of thing that only time will tell. From looking at where he is now, and where he seems to be headed, I simply beg to differ.

Well, I mean, there is a slight problem in that he's not a bluesman. He's a pop icon who plays mostly pop ditties and remakes of SRV and Jimi tunes. He plays some blues as we all do, but that hardly classifies him as a "bluesman".

BB King is a bluesman. Buddy Guy is a bluesman. John Mayer is Hannah Montana in drag.

I see this possible scenario playing out. Mayer realizes he's not s True Bluesman, grows weary of his own stardom, pawns most of his guitar collection, looses his groupies, become so sad he plays real blues, Changes his name to "Shopping Cart" Willie, wins the Guitar Center King of The Blues contest, and goes on to revive the blues in the late 'Teens!

I could dig it. He'd stop writing for Tweeners. Then I might buy his stuff.
