Some day I will build a Strat or Tele. But what are the advantages of useing diffrent woods. Alder, Rosewood, Maple, Swamp ash, Walnut, Mahogany, FMT, QMT, FAT. How does the wood affect the sound?

Hmm, well that was a nice polite thread to get started on.

Be warned Bulldog60, this subject is a can of worms...!

Thanks for the Info Big Jay. I was looking at a site that had many diffrent woods and I wasn't sure just how much the wood body made a difference in sound. My Stagemaster is made out of Basswood and I can feel it vibrate when I play. I did a little test one day and played with jeans on and switched to a pair of sweets and I compressed the body of my guitar with my body and I swear that I could tell a sound diffrence. Could be just my imagination though.

Miami Mike. I was going to do a search but in my excitement to post I forgot to look. But thanks for pointing out the error of my ways.

I think it's like this. The harder the wood the brigther the sound. It's all according to what pickups are used. I'm not sure but i've been told this before and from what i've heard it is true. Alder is warmer sounding wood while ash is bright. Then for an even darker tone one would use mahogany or a combination of two like woods because it's softness or it being made of more than one piece the vibrations from the strings are muffled by the density in the wood. Either way it's not enough of a difference to worry about. I'd just choose what looks and feels the best.

Tone wood on an electric guitar is somewhat pointless.

I have a slide guitar I made out of plywood that sounds as good as my 52 Telecaster.

And no, the Telecaster does not suck.

Im sure you do. Hard to know what you mean by "sounds as good" though. Do you mean "sounds the same"?

Here is a thread to a discussion on the implications of wood with Mike Eldred. I interpret his comments to suggest wood matters.

+1

"Alder is generally very consistant in weight and therefore tone. Ash is all over the place.

Generally, the heavier the wood, the brighter the tone, the lighter the wood, the more bassy the sound."
