I'm sitting here trying to imagine all the the complications that would occur
if an employer tried to bestow the benefits Cadbury gave to his employees
in todays workplace. It would be a wipeout. Every lawyer in America would
get a piece of the action, if it was tried here. Just a thought....

Back to work....

Well thats the thing isnt it. These benefits were instigated in a very different world 125 odd years ago. Pioneering stuff at the time. Sadly to quote Steven Kings character Roland of Gilead, the world has moved on.

Ah my share buying went ok. Made a £6.98 up by the end of trading. I think a few have had the same idea. So I went over the shop and bought

2 tins for £7, so I'm 2pence down but the kids are happy.

Interesting. Forgive my ignorance, but is 2.54% enough of a foothold
to begin courtng shareholders? Also, in order for Cadbury's unwilling
brass to be in this position, does it mean they've already sold more than half of it's shares to the public? Which can then be bid upon by an outsider?
I've never owned a stock, any help would be great, Bigjay.

I was thinking yesterday: Everyone in Poland is Polish. There are no squabbling ethnicities and their demands to satisfy in hiring. No walking through a legal minefield everytime a promotion is given. I'm sure wages and benefits are less, land is cheaper. Bush's Labor Secretary, Elaine
Chau, said of her fellow American's, ".....they're sullen, foul mouthed and lazy". She's right, we are. If I was a high-roller like Kraft, I'n never set up
shop in America or the UK. You'd have to be nuts.
Still, I despise NAFTA, GATT, CAFTA and the rest of them for what they've done to US. We are not going to recover, I fear. And, really, we deserve the fleecing we've gotten.

I sympathise, but we no longer live in an age where a community can, or I would argue should, rely on the pseudo-patricianism of major employers.

Excuse my cynical use of 'pseudo', but even in Victorian times, the creation of Cadbury Village, Bournville and Port Sunlight were no less driven by the commercial imperatives of 'the corporation', than they were by altruism.

The sad thing is that like Port Sunlight – where relatively few people now work for Unilever (formerly Lever Brothers) – those that can't afford to live in 'their own' community will be replaced by those who can. The FABRIC of the place will remain, but the HEART will have been ripped out.

don't let the take over happen if it will hurt Cadbury and Kraft has this cheese product called velveeta that makes for a great welsh rarebit, if you know how to season.

'Nice wise Old George' was only acting in his own interests – likewise, generations of share holders, who today, for the most part, don't give a Monkey's about Cadbury Village and its inhabitants.

Thanks, Bigjay. I wish I knew more about business. I run my own company more like a monkey business.
