I've come across some realy good deals in pawn shops, just yesterday I bought a beautiful Squier M-80 special(Duncan humbuckers, blank, bolt on neck) for $50, and a few days before, bought an Ibanez bass for $35, and an awesome Gretsch club jet for $75...... and over the past few months, an early 60's candy wine Kay 335 copy for $100(my favorite), a fender 112 deluxe plus amp for $75, a Vox VT30 for $50, a peavey vss20 for $100 , but the best deal so far is my 1960 telecaster for $150 ... almost forgot about the $100 Gibson LP (kinda beat up) that I gave my son and the $50 Kramer Baretta I gave to my nefew, and also the perfect $100 Ibanez FWD 60 that I gave my daughter for her birthday........ all of these guitars with the exception of the Les Paul, are in very, very good shape, with only a cleaning, polish, strings and a tune needed to sound, and look great, and for the fellas that don't like or trust a pawn shop.....keep on driving by, I thank you!...

It seems that there are deals to be had, if you want to put up with the B.S.
I don't think I'll be checking with any more pawn shops anytime soon. They do have a used gear section at G.C. that I'm going to check out though. I just wonder how good of a deal one can haggle with them.

It all depends on the situation. I just had my first experience with GC and it was a good one. Unfortuneately the store is 1 1/2 hour drive so I won't be there too often.

No pawn shops in town and only one music store. One downfall to Central WI living.

Incidentally, I'm playing through a Roland JC-50 that I bought at EZ-Pawn for dirt cheap too.

Hey Shredd do you ever go into that Vegas pawn shop thats on TV, I thinks its called Pawn Stars? Whenever they interview Rick there's usually some nice strats in the background. Wonder if they have nice stuff there.

Yea, I've been in there man. Somehow they have a Patriots Super Bowl ring in there. Wonder who that came from? That's a head-scratcher.

As far as music instruments go, not such a good place in my opinion. That place seems to thrive on jewelry and collectible art more than instruments. Seems like every time I go in there, I'm reminded why I don't stop by very much. Maybe it's one of those places that you have to ask what's in the back. hahaha.. But there's an EZ Pawn right down LV BLVD. that has some really cool guitars.

On second thought, years ago I did buy some old hard cases from there. They all of the sudden ran a special for $20 a case.

YZF JOE, I live in Vegas too man. I see decent stuff all the time. But I look for lower level stuff to customize, or stuff that Pawn shops just don't know how to price.

Some of my finds here were:

*Yamaha RBX774 active Bass: $165
*Fender Studio 85 amp: $50
*Fender Eighty Five amp: $70
*!996 Hamer Slammer w/ Dimarzio and Duncan pu's: $70 ( as nice as any mid level Fender Strat)
* Fender Hot Rod DeVille 4x10: $300
*B-52 412ata 4x12 cabinet: $120 (believe it or not, these are sweet speakers)

And that's just some of the stuff I kept.

I don't go into a pawn shop with the idea of looking for any high end Fenders or Gibsons. You're better off buying new in that case. They will price them as such.

Pawn shops in Vegas are awesome. But you have to keep on them often. Good deals get snagged up pretty fast. When it came to buying the Bass, I didn't know much about it. But after some research, I found out they were being sold new at the time for $700-$800. Then I went back and bought it to use as a studio recording bass.

You have to catch them making mistakes.

Pawn shops rarely, if ever, take parts and pickups in account. If I see a Squier Affinity with Duncans or DiMarzio pu's. I can buy it for $50-$70, swap the pickups for stock, and sell the guitar for what I bought it for. Free Pickups. Or vice-verse, sell the pu's on ebay, free guitar, and they paid me to take it off their hands. You can get 2-3x's what you paid for the guitar depending on the pickups. I've been doing it for years. This last time around, I decided to keep 2 loaded guitars and keep them for gigging. One of them being the Hamer.

That's the culmination of two guitars bought for a total of $120. The other guitar turned into a Parts-caster.

Two of the Duncan pickups came out of this guitar. The other one was already in the Hamer. New pots and switches, and the Hamer is a smooth running machine.

After 15 or so years of buying, selling, modding guitars you just kind of end up with a pile of them. A lot of times they end up here.

They do make nice fridge magnets.

You can find some pretty cheap on ebay if you really want to.

Lots of pawn shops in South Florida, but there are no secrets here. People patrol them regularly looking for bargains. I checked out a few but I never saw anything worth buying.

Ok, Here's a few pics for you, but first......you'll notice the tele looks very nice.... it has been refinished and some of the electronics have been changed, that's the way I got it with the exception of the pinstriping which I had done by Darren who is a very well known pinstriper in the Kustom culture world.......

Also the Les Paul is not shown as it is at my son's, and the Ibanez was inadvertantly left out....shown are the 60's Kay,the 72 univox, the Gretsch club jet, Kay D-15 copy( which I got for a whole $5 with a cracked bridge), and the Squier M-80 special.....

eBay killed the pawn shop find. I remember seeing when I was like 14 or 15, an Explorer reissue for $250, but I was broke and had no money at the time, and the money I had went to smoke.

Lat time I saw soemthing decent in a pawn shop, it was an 97 American Std going for $850

+1

I agree. I bought a lot of gear from a well known pawn shop here in Philly and one of them was an 87 Strat Plus for 400 bucks. After a while, I stoppped visiting them because of crappy gears.
2 years ago, I was in the area and stopped by. As usual, all crappy gears, and nothing good enough to plug in. I asked the manager where's the good stuff's are and he said "they're all in Ebay." He even game me their seller ID to bid if I want to.

Needless to say, I did not, and will not be supporting their ebay business.

I've gotten a number of good deals at pawns.

First, it depends on what sort of town you're in. To get good deals, you need to be in a big city, a military town, or a college town. Even then you may still have crappy pawns. I've never seen one with the good stuff in the back reserved for dealers like in the OP.

I make the rounds regularly, checking the pawn nearest my office weekly, and a couple others at least monthly. The staff at all of them know me, if not by name. They also know that I know what a good price is. Two of the places price high, but will immediately give me their best "real" price without haggling. They know I have cash on hand, know the stock as well or better than they do, and that I will walk if the price isn't good.

Conversely, you get your best deals by being a likable buyer. I've actually helped one pawnbroker price an item, and I regularly will buy small items like DVD's as a way of helping support their business. The pawnbroker at the place I go to most often I know by name. It's not like we're buddies, but if you take the time to shoot the sh*t with a pawnbroker, you're apt to get a better deal.

Here's some of my pawn purchases over the last few years:

1980 black Peavey T-60 guitar w/ohsc (solid colors go for more than naturals): $200
Epi MIK G400 SG guitar: $175
Brownsville Choirboy guitar: $100
Peavey '84-'86 Fury I bass: $125
Laney AOR '80's 4x12 cab (miswired, beater): $75
Epi MIK WildKat "Ltd. Edition Custom Shop" guitar (limited run color): $300
Fender Super Champ XD amp (like new): $175
Fender MIM Strat guitar: $150
