I stopped buying guitar magazines because I got sick of seeing a rotation of Avenged Sevenfold, Slash, EVH, Hendrix, Band of the Month, another dead guy issue, then back to Avenged Sevenfold...It seemed like for the past few years thats all they do. Guitar For the Practicing Musician was one of my all time faves from back in the day though...And I like how Guitar Player used to have a different Flexi-disc in each issue with lessons or other audio candy...

I hate the way Slash has become a parody of himself.

Does anyone here subscribe to Total Guitar Magazine? What do you think of it? Is it worth the price you pay?

Im interested in the backing tracks that they provide in some of there issues.

Man, the best backing tracks available are on Mats site (The BT King) and updated weekly along with his journeys, dig it :

I find that Guitar Player caters to more guitarests styles and interests whereas a lot of today's magazines concentrate on sweep-pickiing,120 note a second appregios and shredding. You don't see a lot of techniques that used to be part of every guitarests arsenal.I miss the vinyl discs G.P. had,I still have most of them. One magazine I haven't seen mentioned is Vintage Guitar, while there isn't a lot on technique etc. it has very informative interviews with players who have paid their dues many times over and it would behove a lot of younger players to listen to what these guys have to say.

The U.K mags are the only ones I buy these days and if I had to grade them Guitar Techniques is by far the best of the three. To be honest I dont even buy Total Guitar anymore as it really has nothing to offer anymore. Guitarist is a great mag to but it does not have the lessons or tracks you are looking for as they only have a few at the end. But they have some great interviews and gear reviews. Premier Guitar is another good one. The thing though is they cost an arm and a leg here though.

Straycat.

When/if I buy them (usually guitarist) I get them a month old off a market stall that sells out of date, but unread mags, they only cost £1 a time. Theres very rarely anything in them I read. Get intouch mate we'll sort something out.

For backing tracks your better off looking around the web.

Total guitar seems to be a kids mag to me. If your after some new kiddy band info then yeah its ok. Theres rarely very little of any worth in it to anyone above the age of twenty, though it is far better than guitarplayer or guitar world. Its instruction is certainly more encompassing, and your getting instruction from good hardworking graduates of music who will happily tell you their credentials. Not some idiot guitarist from slayer, or paul gilbert saying play this nonsense riff at 3987bpm. Guitarist seems to be the elite mag of choice at the moment. Guitar techniques is quite jaw dropping when it comes to instruction and seems to have less adverts than anything else. Thats the way I'd go, if I was to go buying guitar mags again.

Non of em are worth the cover value. Your paying to see adverts that companies pay to put in. For reward you get innaccurate slanted reviews on gear and a near subliminal message to buy buy buy.

cracking link :D
