On every guitar I have ever owned, I always seem to snap the D string right on the bridge.

Why is this? Is it the way I am playing or something else?

Thanks for any replies, it's costing me a lot in new strings :(

Hi 92Fender: dunno. Does it happen when bending hard? Or a sharp bit of flaking chrome on the saddle? Tell us more.

Anyhow. Buying sets of singles is a partial solution. At least then you don't need to break into a new set when you break just one string.

D'Addario and Ernie Ball are two makers who sell strings singly.

Cheers - C

Sorry, what else do you need to know? I just did it on my Tele so I can get some pics up if you need?

It just happens in the middle of playing a chord usually, and there is no flaking chrome or rough parts on the bridge.

Where can you get singles from? I don't think my local music shop sells them.

Thanks for your reply!!

Well, the circumstances of when it happens.

Does it always break when you do a certain thing: such as bending; or playing a particular chord in a particular position; or strumming; or picking...?

Or some other factor we can isolate?

If a particular string keeps breaking (especially if it ain't the top e) then there has to be a cause. And that must be either mechanical (problem at the saddle; sharp spot on a fret; etc) or player technique.

More info will establish which it is.

Cheers - C

Are you using a thick pick?

How are you attacking the strings?

It could possibly be a burr in the saddle...catching on the string and viola...

Go up to the next size. I used to break A and D, and once or twice a low E when I was using 10s, when I made the switch to 11-49s, I haven't had any issues since...if you don't want to go up to the next size, get an extra wound D string that is a little it bigger than what comes in whatever packs you normally get and see if that helps...this is of course if there is not an issue with a saddle or something first...

...just to get this out of the way:

You're not Edward Scissorhands are you?

Since you mentioned that you manage to pull this trick off on every guitar you have ever owned, I am guessing it is something about you and not every guitar you touch.

I am going with the acid in you sweat and the oil in your hands. I played in a band with a guy that rusted his strings in very short order. It was just his personal chemistry. Why the D string? Well, it is wound. It is holding your your acidic fluid in the winds even if you wipe the string down. It breaks first because it is the smallest and most susceptible to corrosion.

Hit your new strings with some Finger Ease before you play them and use the same everytime you finish playing.

people with this type of body PH would corode the other metal parts on a guitar.

Does this make since in your case?

Does the string always break in the same place i.e at the bridge, or at the nut? Where is the breakage occuring.

+1 That would be my guess or the where the string comes through the trem block.

Rusty strings come from salt in your sweat, not acid. LOL

Thanks for all your replies.

It's always at the same place - right on the saddle. There is always a thread of the winding left connected, but the rest is totally gone.

I haven't got round to sticking a new string on my Telecaster so I will take a photo before I do and post it here.

Yes my hands do get sweaty but I always clean my guitars after playing them. Not obsessivly, just wiping them down with a cloth - strings included.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the saddles, the Telecaster is brand new, the Strat is in mint condition and both Les Paul's are the same.
