Caught The Buddy Holly Story last night on cable. Altho it was full of
inacuracies, it was still fun to watch again.

What's your favorite bio pic about a musician?

And why is it so hard to at least get the correct types and years of the guitars and amps they used?

It was probably way cheaper to use what they used. And really, only us guitar nerds really care about that minutia.

That said I really thought they did a pretty good job on that film.

I thought Walk The Line was a really good movie about Johnny Cash. The couple playing the parts of Johnny and June did thier own singing and did a good job doing it. Another good one is Great Balls Of Fire.

I watched it last night too.... its a great movie but like you said, why couldnt they get the guitar part right? They had to put a guitar in his hands anyway, so why not the right model? They had him using a Telecaster until almost the end of the movie. Did someone at the last minute say "uh hey guys......"

My favorite would be Walk The Line. I'm a big Cash fan and to hear the actors actually play and sing is a great way to honor someone as influential as him.

While we're on the subject, I just finished watching "Hellhound on my Trail: The Afterlife of Robert Johnson", although not so much a bio as it is an induction in the hall of fame tribute it was still enjoyable.

Also seen "Cadillac Records" not long ago and I liked that one as well.

At least it's Gene Krupa on the soundtrack if not on screen.

And Benny Goodman plays on the soundtrack of The Benny Goodman Story too. In that one almost everyone from the pre-war jazz world turns up playing themselves - except Benny Goodman!

Cheers - C

I would also have to say The Buddy Holly Story as far as bio pics go. That movie was shot on a very low budget but even if it was not I would doubt they would have the exact period Strat, and as twelvebar pointed out only us guitar fanatics would look for something like that. If he was playing a Les Paul than it would be a major boo boo.lol

The thing I loved about that was the actors played there own instruments and did there own singing and I think they did a great job. As my brother has that soundtrack album. I do know Gary Busy bought Buddys acoustic guitar back then for something like 200 grand.

While not a big fan of their music, I liked the Anvil movie. It's just incomprehensible to me how those guys could hang onto the dream after so much disappointment.

The Selena movie with Jennifer Lopez was good too.

And though it's not the same I was a big fan of VH1's Behind the Music when it first came out, back in the day when they covered real bands like Thin Lizzy or Journey. Sort of mini-weekly bio pics.

Nowadays it's rap and hip-hop artists, though those genres require some talent it's not the same to me.
