No, that's not quite right. Buckcherry gets censored equally around my 15-year-old daughter as Public Enemy is.

There are a lot of comparisons if you care to look beyond a surface level, and isn't very far fetched. Maybe it's because I spend most of my days analyzing and comparing literature that I can find the elements in common.

Well good b/c Alot of people won't make that distinction, however, your censoring of Public enemy is another thing entirely. I have had the pleasure of meeting Chuck D, and he is a highly intelligent and well spoken individual. You may not agree with his language and deliverance, but you have to admit he was trying to get something across other than "Lets get high" or "Yuuuuuu, Super Man that H**!!!"

which is lot different from,

"No we're not the same
Cause we don't know the game
What we need is awareness, we can't get careless"
-Chuck D

Also, where as you censor BuckCherry but don't associate what they do with all rock artists, most write off what 50 cent or Soulja boy does as all rap, which is just wrong.

UGH this frustrates me... I wish people could learn to stop lumping all rap into the same mainstream category. Go look up the lyrics to Lupe Fiasco's "He Say, She say." That is most definitely about none of those things:

Personally there is some rap I like, and some I don't...Rap is like pro wrestling...if you like it, no explanation is needed...if you don't like it, no explanation will ever do...Different strokes, for different folks. Just cause somebody likes something that you don't like or don't get doesn't mean that there is anything wrong with them, or you, its a big enough world out there that people can like different things if they want to...Its called individuality.

You are right on the money... I don't know it just irks me when I see fellow guitarists making ignorant comments about something that they don't know fully about. It kind of reminds me of how I used to feel about country music until I listened to it earnestly. I used to kind of feel that it was my duty as a black man to not like country music, mainly because I guess that stereotype was reinforced. Once I heard Brad Paisley rip, my mind was completely changed.

I believe there is something in Every music genre someone can appreciate. If you youtube a Roots concert, you will see their guitar player rip amazing solos atleast once a show.

See...this is what is so funny...when there is music I don't like...eg: RAP, Thrash, punk...etc...I either change the channel or just turn the radio off. Some folks see merit in RAP...in the old school yes...but the current stuff...I will be honest what I hear these days really is louzy...again this is just my opinion. Just like some of the thrash bands...the one that comes to mind..Bio Hazard...to me...nothing but noise...and when that stuff comes on the radio I turn it off.... :D

I've always liked music with African American roots; blues, jazz, gospel, soul, r&b. When I was 6, I made my parents take me to see Mahalia Jackson. Rap doesn't work for me, I think I would rather listen to disco

I will say that I did like Tone Loc and some RUN/DMC, "Tricky" etc. It's like anything else, you get a handful of people that are good at it and 1000 imitators who aren't.....Also like Snoop's "Drop It Like It's Hot"...

Hmmmmm....if you think that way then do you think Blues is the same way? Blues is full of sexual suggestions..... degrading womean. Did you know that the term "Rock and Roll" is a slang for sexual intercourse?

A lot of these comments seem to be repeating one another. I used to be very anti-rap, but then I just forced myself to listen, and I found some great stuff.

Sexual innuendo and lyrics degrading women are two different things. Some of the best examples are from female blues artists. It can be done with class, without uttering one foul word leaving it all to your imagination. That's the difference. Robert Johnson's Phonograph Blues is a great example. John Lee Hooker's blues are another great example of sexual innuendo. Not one foul word uttered and no one's degraded but you still know what they're talking about.

Blues and rap for me are two completely different genres. Country and Western music could be called blues too, as can some of the corny love ballads. Just because the lyrics contain pain and suffering doesn't make it the blues. It's the way it's presented too. Like Ray Charles said, rap is just talking.

If you like rap it's all cool. A guitar forum is a weird place to discuss rap. The backing tracks used to be stolen from popular songs using just enough to avoid copyright infringement, I don't find raps backing tracks creative or entertaining. YMMV

There's more to the general dislike of rap than just one single issue. It 's the overall package. Lots of artists use foul language. That's not really the issue. Lots of artists also refer to a criminal element and a few artists even degrade women. Thing is, Rap does all of those things in a loud-N-proud, in-your-face fashion. Plus they rip off real music. It boggles my mind how anyone could possibly defend it. Especially a musician or someone who is at least interested enough in becoming a bona fide musician that they would join this board. Poetry? Puh-lease ....

people who can't see the similarity between first generation 70's rap and blues scare me. How can you be a musician and not hear it? I hear Blues in Flamenco, Country, Folk, R&B, Rock N Roll and early rap.

It's the same pain, just presented slightly differently. But in many cases, not even all that differently. It's still a I,IV,V progression with an altered rhythm.

And since when is BioHazard considered thrash? Thrash is Megadeth, early (pre 90's) Metallica, Slayer, Exodus, etc. BioHazard is nu-metal hip hop. Thrash is a very distinct genre of metal, and Megadeth is the best example. Incredible musicianship at incredible speeds.
