A lot of my friends are anti-rap. I would like to ask this forum, to those who hate rap, why? There are some real poets out there.

And I'm not talking about Soulja Boy here... :]

Anybody?

Hello Krad! If people are behaving/sounding anti, they probably are, it just may not be the subject talked about right then, sometimes anti behaviors are misdirected at things other than the subject but associated with it in some way. Most people like spoken word with music background or included in songs themselves. The late great Lou Rawls worked the crowds at his concerts with his voice and rap between songs, Barry White, Teddy Pendergrass and the list is endless of those guys that crafted what is now Rap because they were great artists people wanted to hear what they said to get their message across. I am not familiar with Rap other than M&M and kid Rock, so not really. This may be a good way to look at it; if you are not being paid to play on the recording, its a waste of time change the subject.

I haven't heard anything yet that I've liked except a couple of Red Hot Chili Peppers tunes that were pretty good.

I think the very early RAP from the 70s had positive and musical potential from the likes of the Sugar Hill Gang's "Rapper's Delight" and Grand Master Flash. Rock artists saw this as well and tap into it. Notably Areosmith with "walk this way", Blondie with "rapture", Duran Duran with "white lines", and just to name a few Def Leppard with "pour some sugar on me". Notice these songs made top 40 on the charts?

I agree, that there are darker forms of RAP that glorify violence, like gangsta rap that I can't listen to, but putting down RAP based on the likes of fifty cents is wrong as not all RAP glorify violence. Similarly, there are harder forms of Metal that also glorify violence and wonder why they were not mentioned.

Anyone with a true appreciation of music in general would see that rap is for those that want the Rock and Roll lifestyle but doesn't have the talent or doesn't want to work for it.

I don't like rap, but you can't outlaw it either. If you do that what's next, Blues? There's a ton of sexual innuendo in Blues music. Censorship isn't the answer. Not buying it is. That's the beauty of having choices, you can either listen or not.

I love hip hop music. There's a lot of ignorance in this thread, it's kind of depressing...

But yeah, Atmosphere, Brother Ali, The Coup, Cage, Wu Tang Clan, POS, DoomTree, Jean Grae. So much awesome stuff. PIf all you know is wehat you hear on the radio then you don't know the art form. Pop Music is terrible as a rule.

i think rap rock is semi-standable, but only because it has other things going on, like a guitar riff or a bass hook

There's a lot of garbage in the rock world too. Bad lyrics and even worse musicianship. Gwar is coming to Phila. Pa in Dec. Any takers? :D

Depending on the area that you live in Rap can get a bit rough. It doesn't make you ignorant, It's just what you hear locally and what you know. It's just what is being played locally and what the DJ's can get away with. Yeah I know, the history of rap........ I defend the right for them to do what they do, I just don't have to listen to it. I grew up listening to R&B and Soul legends. The new R&B for me is just a bunch of bass laden, thumping headache stuff with mediocre vocalists and even more mediocre lyrics. But that's only my opinion and it don't mean squat. I find no deep message's in Rap, Hip Hop, or the new R&B music.

It bothers me when I hear 9 year old kids refer to girls a bitches an ho's. I do some work in the Phila school district and hear it on an almost daily basis. I realize there are some positive lyrics around, but the young people seem to gravitate towards the negative for some reason. Go figure.

I'm sorry but some bloke stringing words together with incorrect inflections on certain syllables isnt talented. Kids have been doing that in playgrounds for years. dela soul I'll conceed. Their ear for melody was truely great. Fallin that they did with teenage fanclub, say no go and me myself an I, do command a fair bit of respect. Simply because of their use of understated sublime melodies. Words that fit the melody and remain pretty much within the confines of that songs story or message. Rather than just a series of testosterone filled brash boasting that appeals to no one not experiencing the hormone rage of adolesance.

The rest of that genre you can shove down a dogs throat and shoot it, far as I'm concerned. I once heard that its origins came from bebop jazz, I just dont see it. Look what its got us, thick bimbo's who I suspect dont have the intellegence to tie their own shoelaces, shaking their jugs whilst they lipsink on some over sylized video fashionshow.

Its got nothing to do with any form of rebellion or even free thought. Just another marketing ploy to sell 3 stripe adidas tracksuits and increase illiteracy in chavs.

Granted I cant include the whole genre in that statement, just all the bits of it I've seen. Even NWA and public enemy were garbage. IceT should stick to films. Atleast with films you can see he's nothing but a fat dancer.

RAP what is not to love:
1. You got to love all those dancing women with large thighs
2. Rented for the video cadillac escalades
3. Rented for the video Florida mansions
4. Wads of cash throwing in your face
5. YO, in every verse.

Later...

Yes -- but beyond "a bad message", it is also very foul mouthed.

Voting with your green is a good policy, if we weren't in a society that practicaly encourages stupidity to increase sales. No matter how many half minded people boycott something theres a million dummies waiting to buy the next chocolate teapot.

What is the difference between Hip Hop, Rap, Trance, House and some others that I can't think of right now?

Though i personally dont care for it, alot of rap portrays a misguided, disfunctional Jerry Springer mentality. This seems to agree with the kids that take to it instantly when a new video, or rap song comes out. I think it
portrays a lifestyle that many of our kids have embraced(regrettably).
Although i choose not to listen to it, it is contantly shoved in our faces through television, radio, and 20" speakers in Escalades across america. However, I am quite certain the same things were said about me when I blasted guns-n-roses through my 6X9's. (yes you did it too, you know who you are) The fact of the matter is, in the Elvis era, alot of things were said of Elvis' "Gyrating" hips, and so on back then it was almost as outlandish.
The kids loved it. When the Hippie movement arrived on Woodstock, most
older people freaked about all the drugs and other things that when on there. A whole generation led like sheeple because of a dream of freedom and love portrayed through music. The younger people loved it. The same would hold true today as history truly repeats itself. Though I personally think Rap is crap, the young people love it. It will not go away as long as there is a marketable people to sell it to.
just my
2 cents and my Opinion
