A lot of my friends are anti-rap. I would like to ask this forum, to those who hate rap, why? There are some real poets out there.

And I'm not talking about Soulja Boy here... :]

Anybody?

I don't call degrading women, inciting violence, or racial hatred poetry.

First & foremost...
For better or worse...
I'm simply a Rock N' Roller.

But, secondly, it just doesn't speak to me.

I do listen to different kinds of Music, but because
whatever that may be speaks to my life somehow.

And Rap, while i can appreciate great beats,
just doesn't speak to me like that, generally.

I agree that there are some serious poets in the game, as well
as lots of talented producers, but it just doesn't connect w/ me.

The exception that springs immediately to mind...
I loved A Tribe Called Quest's 'The Low End Theory'.
But that record is, like, 17 years old or something.

And that's my story...

I despise it. To me, it is merely ranting with background noises. It, by the definition of music, is not music.

I like and listen most music genres, even some very unusual ethnic forms.
rap is the only one I cannot listen to for more than a few seconds before sticking in the ear plugs and walking away.
Just stick a C in front of it to correctly title this form for expression.

Not sure even the term expression is correct in this context.
Maybe verbal projectile diarrhea is a better fit.

There are a few decent rap artists out (Q-Tip, De La Soul and the Beastie Boys immediately come to mind -- and there are plenty of others). The problem is, there are far, far many more awful rap artists then there are good ones.

The thing about rap: it frankly doesn't take a tremendous amount of skill to recite some lyrics over a beat (at least not in comparison to, say actually learning to play an instrument well or learning to be a trained singer). Because it's fairly easy to do, you have a lot of not-very-talanted people putting out a lot of garbage.

[I think electronic music often suffers from the same problem. There are some really awesome electronic acts (like Tangerine Dream!), but they can get lost in a flood of mediocre 'artists' who think they're musicians because they can operate a computer.]

Add to it the fact that a huge percentage of rap lyrics seem to be about shooting people, selling drugs and beating up women -- I'd just rather not listen to it.

It's the same for me. Rap just isn't my thing.

I used do listen do rap back in the nineties. But during the turning of a century the rap started to sound like pop/dance music so much today that there is almost no diffrence in style between Britney Spears and Bustah Rhymes :? . I agree there are some good poets out there but the only rappers that are "making it" are the rappers that don't have any substance only alot of AIIGHT and OKAY.
In 2000 I was still listening to rap but had also discovered Nu-Metal which slowly transformed me to punk and then on to classic rock of all era. The Tony Hawks video games were huge impression on me during that time and intruduced me to the sounds of the Misfits, Motörhead, Iggy Pop and much more.

In short RAP is short for CRAP

A big portion of rap has a bad message. Not all of it but a big portion. To me its not that musical. I know some others will disagree and thats okay.

I try not to be critical of music styles/preferences...but man I just can't embrace this form. It is very boring, predictiable and in many cases offensive. I also can't really respect it because it is looping and essentially IMO stealing phrases from other songs and loop loop looping it to create "music". JMO

In my opinion rap should be outlawed. I used to listen to rap back in the 80's when it was civil. The FatBoys, Fresh Prince, and the pioneers of the genre that really had something to say. But now i realize that it takes no talent to rhyme words by cursing and degrading women while enticing violence. Anyone with a true appreciation of music in general would see that rap is for those that want the Rock and Roll lifestyle but doesn't have the talent or doesn't want to work for it.
