I just caught a little bit of the end of a news story on the radio and they mentioned something about a new commemorative postage stamp in the U.K. According to what little I heard they will be honoring British classic rock bands, but I didnt hear which ones. Anyone have any info on this? I would really like to know which bands will be honored.
Pretty cool idea.

I would much prefer it, if they just got the royal mail working again.

Never mind comemorative stamps, how about getting some letters through letterboxes. DHL have had a huge increase in business since they royal mail started the latest batch of strikes. Perhaps they should release a DHL comemorative stamp.

Thanks for the info Snowy. Alot of great art work in those covers.
Niki: I had no idea about the problems with the mail system over there. Strange how the postage stamps made the news here, but the strikes didnt. I hope they get it worked out soon.

What does it cost to mail an ordinary letter over there?

For once I am disagreeing with you brother. I am enjoying having the excuse that some of my bills 'havn't arrived due to the recent strike.'

How do you decide which side to spit on if you get a Coldplay stamp?

39p/$0.63.

[Sigh] Regarding our series of postal strikes: most people here don't have much understanding what it's all about as neither side is explaining their case very well.

In essence it is an almost uniquely good and comprehensive postal service, from what I've seen around the world. Till a few years ago it was also very profitable. However, its management used deregulatory opportunities to take a 13 year "holiday" from investing in the company pension scheme, with the result that today they are running a £9 billion/$14b deficit.

That obviously couldn't go on. Major measure have to be taken to correct that situation - and the present industrial dispute is over how the heck that is to happen.

Unfortunately, in a throwback to decades past the current dispute is characterised by a crass bullying management on one side and a knuckleheaded union on the other. Most of us thought we'd got far beyond this kind of thing.

...And that's as far into politics as I go here!

ANYHOW. Of all the Pink Floyd album covers to use - is that one the most obvious...?

Cheers - C

Ours is currently at 42 cents, but there is a program where you can buy stamps called "lifetime stamps" and 'lock in' at the current rate and use them after anymore increases.

Last year, I mailed a DVD to Sweden and it was about $5.00 and got there in 5-6 days.

Haha - Americans always love this kinda stuff!

OK, I'll be more specific. We have first class stamps which are 39p/$0.63 which are for next day delivery anywhere in the country. We also have second class stamps at 30p/$0.48 which also often give next day delivery, but it might also be second day.

And we also have the "lifetime" stamps: in fact I always have to look up current postage rates because I'm still using a vast sheet of stamps bought about eight years ago at whatever the rate was then.

But things were far better in the days gone by. In the 19th century you could post a letter and expect it to be delivered anywhere in the country the same day. Often several times a day. Many 19th century "classic" novels hinge on that amazing service. (We invented the post office, after all; and stamps.)

And only about 12 years ago I spent several months in Hong Kong. My then girl friend used to write to me every week putting an ordinary rate stamp on the letter and it invariably arrived the next morning 12,000 miles away. Not bad! (Odd, cos we talked on the phone most days - but she loved writing letters. A vanishing art...)

Cheers - C

They are the most boring band I have ever heard.
I emailed a friend in London to see if he could get me a set of the stamps when they come out.
