Tone (for me): A strat to a fender amp (I whish I had one) and get a little crunch. If you want to have a feed back add blues overdrive and turn on crunchbox and blues overdrive at the same time... and of course a reverb...

I guess in terms of an opinion, my favorite tone is from Eric Clapton. It seems that no mater what he is playing, I just get lost in the "Tone"

Tone is in the ear of the beholder.

Love,

What we call "tone" really means the musical term "timbre".

To my ear some of the all time greats include:

Early Knopfler
Most Brian May
JJ Cale on Kiss the World Goodbye
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Most BB King
Mid period Pete Townshend
Gilmour's first note on Shine On...
Joe Bonamassa's first lead note on High Water Everywhere

Every kind of gear has been used to make the above sounds. So no clues there...

Cheers - C

Yeah - I was looking at that recently.

However, my boat-building friend gave me that lump of iroko and Big Jay seems so desperate for his "Hurricane Strat" to get made from it that I'm afraid that project has to jump up the list.

And there's one other to come even before that...

Cheers - C

No problem as I got nothing but time. I know they all will be worth the wait!

Ha! You beat me to the punch, Ceri! :D

I agree. That is breathtaking. I also love Billy Gibbons's guitar work on "Blue Jean Blues" and the opening strains of the song "Cheat" by the Blue Hawaiians.

Oh well, back to work. 8)

Hi , Theres so many great tonehounds (timbrehounds)? like Tony Iommi
to Rory Gallagher etc etc, saw The Who about 3 years ago and Townshends red strat sounded pretty cool.

Going slightly off base for a moment, i find "home tone" one the most elusive things to crack with an electric guitar. Someone posted a great tip recently about running the input direct into the return jack of the amp. (via a pedal or modeller of some kind)

Apologies to who posted that tip  but i tried that and it did bring a welcome change to useability with a pod xt but with a blackstar drive pedal .... :? awful noise ...blame the bloke on the guitar ...

So regarding getting better tone are there any obvious things that might help, any ideas would be welcome.
Sometime before christmas i should be getting a low powered amp thats on order which will give more options (b#',-%£) hope so judging by the cost! but that still leaves the existing amp issues already mentioned.

Thanks for any thoughts guys

Alan

it does my heart good to see that most people have a good idea of what a good tone is. all the players named are probably the greatest ever or will be. we should all take notes. some of those guys have changed thier sounds over the years maybe due to commercal pressures or personal reasons or tastes , they have left basic blueprints for all of us to follow.for me i like guitar+cord+amp ,all fender. maybe a chorus pedal. tone is opinion....what sounds good to you. george lynch said it was Iomi's drive with a good single coil....it's all opinion, but it works.
