Have a look at this video I posted -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eu4etPLecrQ

Each time through the 12 bars, I use only 3 notes from the minor pentatonic scale. An exercise in avoiding playing too many notes!

Theres 8 notes in that, all in. Nice playing though, very nice.

Now I gotta ask can you do it with just 3 notes?

Yeah, I lost count after the first three notes, but sounds good.

Pretty cool lesson, the simplest leads around are the level of my solo ability.

This might be something that I could actually learn and do. Looks like something that once you master you could build on.

Thanks guys, glad someone liked it.

I am playing 3 notes from the pentatonic scale each time through the 12 bars, not 8 notes. Yeah, I bend a bit, play ghost notes, etc, because that is my style of phrasing, but I am trying hard to stick only 3 notes from the A minor pentatonic scale each time through the 12 bars. You try too - it's not easy! :)

I count 8

In an A 12bar try just F#, A and B. I dont count bends as seperate notes (although technicaly they are), I tend to think of them more as voicings. Bending on those 3 notes in a maj pentatonic gets some nice inflections. Its particulary easy to bend up to maj or mi 7ths of the D and E portions of the passage.

nikininja, listen to the example - I use only 3 notes each time through the 12 bars. The intro of me playing is not the example, it's just me wanking around.

Thanks Mike! It's a good exercise to practice the same idea with other scales and modes too. Puts a strangle on those "too many notes" licks...

Cheers
Robert

I played a gig last night and couldnt stop thinking about the 3 note thing. I was doing what the guy was explaining, just stay on those notes and see how many different combos you can do in different ways, i really liked playing around like that and i sounded great! It really helps to just slow down and try different stuff.
