I started because I wanted to play heavy metal, but the more I matured, the more I started to love the blues. I went from listening to Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden to B.B. King and Eric Clapton.

It was the best decision of my life.

Well, I didn't start because I wanted to play heavy metal--but at one point that was my main playing style. But I always did like blues--and it has mostly taken over.

When people ask me what I like to play, I answer, "Different stuff, but mostly blues, and strumming chords."

I'm not from a particularly musical family but I was exposed to music at a very early age. I can remember listenin' to Scottish fiddle and accordian tunes as well as swing, big band jazz and classical music when I was about 4. Listened to Elvis with my babysitter when I was 6. Marty Robbins was number one for 28 weeks (I think that's right) with "El Paso" when I was 8 and then I discovered the hit parade. Buddy Holly, Bill Haley and the Comets, the Everley Brothers, Duane Eddy, then the Beach Boys, Roy Orbison, The Shadows, The Ventures. In 1964 I wanted to be a Beatle! Started playin' in bands in 1965 and played all through highschool. Then came the big layoff. Went to university and put my guitar away and didn't play much for about 40 years. Always kept in touch with what was goin' on though, includin' workin' in a record store for four years in the late 70's / early 80's. Still listen to just about everything to stay in touch. Now I'm playin' again at 60 and all the old instrumentals are slowly comin' back to me. I'm even recordin' some of them on a little four track recorder I bought. Havin' a ball.
