Frankly i dont know, My house always had numerous guitars in it and ive been playing bass since i was 9 or 10.I went for bass over guitar because everyone plays guitar, might aswell be different and its good for business because if anybody in school wants to start a band they come to me for a bass player because there is no-one else.Although the bands never really happen its still nice to be asked.

playing relieves stress and worries to me...

i started playing guitars but it didn't work for me... i could play lead but i could never keep up...
a few months later i borrowed my cousin's bass until i sold my guitar and got my own fender...

I heard Pink Floyd's Animals album when I was fifteen, and just decided I wanted to play guitar based on hearing that. I'm still doing it.

I sucked at video games.

Have 3 brothers who are brilliant at video games.

Found an old nylon string acoustic at my uncles and brought it home so I'd have something to thumb around on while video games were being played and friends were over.

Got my first electric at 12 years old. Started with a lot of Nirvana, Silverchair type stuff. "Progressed" to Metallica type stuff.

Got bored of it all, cuz everyone and their mother was into Metallica and we were all just copy cats with really dirty hair.

Got a haircut, a older friend of mine took me under his wing, and showed me some cooler stuff from the 80's/early 90's i.e. bands like Mr. Big, Extreme, Lynch Mob, EVH, Richie Kotzen, Paul Gilbert, Yngwie & Rising Force, DLR Band, Ozzy but with Jake E. Lee...

Needless to say I took my soloing and riffing to a much more tasteful level, and I haven't looked back for the past 5 or 6 years.

Finally I just couldn't get away from blues and blues rock. Settled on the KWS, SRV, Richie Kotzen, stuff.

I incorporate that stuff into the church band, which is kind of my main stage for the time being.

Growing up I idolized my brother Bill. He was awesome. Everyone liked him, women loved him and he was a talented guy. He was an exceptional jazz trombone player..I mean this kid could really play the horn...one day he comes home with an acoustic guitar. Now..I was a sickly kid growing up always breaking something or just really sick. I wanted to make my brother proud and I always felt like I never did. He alway encouraged me and protected me and looked after me. sorry, back on the story...so I see his guitar and I see how he was struggling to learn it. I was blown away...this is a guy who could do anything. I got the idea when he went out to work that I would try and learn a song and I could teach him...instead of the other way around. Fortunately for me I have been blessed with a great ear...I put on my Eagles Hotel California album(yes album...LOL) and I learned New Kid In Town. The next morning Bill and I are hanging out in our room he is struggling trying to play his guitar and I told him well I will play you a song. I play it...he is blown away and encouraged me to play :D That was 35 years ago...I haven't stopped since. He was killed in a car wreck in N. Cali 18 years ago and well..I play in his memory alot of times.

Thats a beautiful story bro. Thanks so much for sharing it!

This IS a killer story. All thumbs! :)

Awesome, I do that too! Once the worship leader looked over at me when we had just finished a song and asked, "it that blues?". I had been throwing some SRV licks into it. At first I thought I was going to get in trouble but he let me have at it from then on. :D

my dad took me for guitar lessons in 1960. i was 6 years old. i didn't ask why, but as years progressed i entered talent contests in grade school, and won a few. i played in bands from 66 to 78, then stopped playing when i got married and had kids.

as for why i play- it's easy. we all love it when people come up and say " we really enjoyed you" or that the people at the wedding you played for want to hire you again.

it's funny- my dad never played any instrument, but wanted to see me play something. i still don't know how i wound up with guitar. i come from a big polish family, and they wanted me to play accordian. thanks dad, for not listening to them!

Cool, another--"I don't know"

Except there weren't musical instruments around my home, until I started taking piano lessons, and guitars came late--but I always wanted to be a guitar player--piano was a detour. But a good detour--it was helpful.

All my life when asked "What do you want to be when you grow up?" by parents , teachers and friends I've always answered "Musician." This was because when I saw Six my brother received a guitar and amp for Christmas. Along with this was a DVD of The Band's final concert "The Last Waltz". The years leading up to me getting a guitar were spent watching this movie and fantasizing about being like The Band. Finally about 2 years ago my brother decided to "loan" me a guitar (A guitar which he hasn't taken back  ) and a small practice amp. Since then I've been trying to get me a band together while writing some songs.

On Christmas I received a Bass and Bass amp. I asked for this because
A. I can never find a bassist in my school/area and B. I like the feeling of being the driving force of the band.

BUUUT I still haven't been able to get a band together. Although I have been helping out 4 of my friends with their metal band. My Physical Science teacher knows this guy who books a local theater and said he would probably let us use it free. So I'll probably help them out with that in the next coming months
