So a good friend of mine here wishes to learn to play bass. He asked me what would be a good starter, not playing bass seriously, I didn't know. I consulted my wife who reccomended a Dean Edge, ESP B-10, Epi Thunderbird IV or Squier P-Bass.

But I'm looking for a more rounded opinion since that doesn't really narrow anything down, what would be a good starter bass? I'm leaning toward reccomending a Squier starter pack. I usually reccomend beginner guitarists get the Squier Affinity Strat pack.

+1 on the starter pack from Squire. Cant think of a better place to start with the bare necessities and a decent quality beginner bass.

See if you can find a good used MIM before shooting for the squier, you could probably score one for $300 if you shop around, the same price as the pack. Course then you have to buy the amp and stuff but gear acquisition syndrome is part of the fun, why not get started early? :P

Ceallach - I started out my journey w/ the bass on a slightly used Squier P Bass I found in a pawn shop. The pups are a bit weak, but for the level of bass playing I'm at now, it's no big deal. I'll probably upgrade down the road if/when I get myself to a higher level of playing.

I say find a lightly used Squier or MIM and go from there. If you can find a used one, it will have already taked the hit on depreciation, and if the interest isn't there after awhile, it can probably be sold for about the same amount that's in it.

Good luck to everybody!

That's true, but you gotta get into the instrument to get gas first.
