Here is what showed up at my door Tuesday after last weeks Fender Friday. Its a Mark Knopfler Artist Series Strat in Hot Rod Red. It plays well, but the action is slightly higher than my others. This guitar is very resonant and sustains extremely well. Sounds great with some distortion. The pickups are not quite as airy and transparent as the CS 69's in my 2004, but still very good. The fretboard radius will take a little time to get used to, but I have no doubt I will like it better as I play it more. The finish had a very small chip at the edge of the bridge that likly occurred when they installed the bridge. I can also see small areas where the nitro paint pooled inside the little grains in the wood, but I bet that is typical of Vintage guitars with this paint. At $999.99 I'm extremely happy with it. I know how everyone likes pics so I uploaded quite a few, even one with the chip at the corner edge of the bridge.
Niki: I think you may be right. The red ones are faster.

Hi Randy: well I'm one guy you know is going think that looks drop dead gorgeous! Congrats!

Regarding the grain showing through the finish: that means the lacquer is pretty thin and that is exactly what the nitrocellulose freaks love to see. A1 on that.

I don't think the little chip matters: don't sweat that one.

As to the action: the book you recommended to me has a few pages of discussion of Knopfler's guitars and it claims that he uses a very low action, which he can get away with as a player with a fairly light touch. Not that any of that matters: set that action for your own requirements.

And $999? What an amazing deal!

Now. Make it cry and sing... :D

Cheers - C

PS Glad to see Mr Bill around the place (above). I was just beginning to wonder...

Interesting. Not wanting to rain on Randy's parade, and simultaneously wishing him many happy hours of 'crying and singing' with that Strat, one of the things which came up in conversation during my dinner with 'tweedcase' back on the 15th was his observation that the MIA factory quality control seemed to be getting a bit shoddy.

Any thoughts?

Thanks for all the great comments guys. I think it will become one of my favorites as I spend more time with it. My GAS attack should be relieved temporarily now, but on second thought, tomorrow is once again Fender Friday. Hmmm :?:
