I wouldn't consider myself a "superfan" of U2, but "Joshua Tree" is one of the best albums ever recorded. It's packed with tremendous songs, anthems in some respect. Poignant, moving and timeless, it may not be a technical achievement, but it remains a great accomplishment. The Edge's contribution should not be overlooked.

Well, I have some bootlegs, but you can also find a lot more at :

That's a lot of equipment/effects...makes you wonder how he would sound with just him, an amp, and guitar.

All the gadgetry hides a lack of ability (IMO)

RK, MT,
I agree with you...if he has to have that many effects he needs to just give it up. If you really take their music apart...the bass player is the guy who carries the music in that band...not that that is a bad thing, but still 40 some effects...way too much. If you can't get your point across without all that stuff....well...sorry guys I am on a soapbox. Ok, I am off it now.. :D

Let me start by saying I am a fan of U2. However I never considered The Edge a great guitarist. He is a fair player who has learned to use effects to create some of the greatest anthems to come out of the 80's. Recently I saw the excellent film "It Might Get Loud". There is a scene in that movie that shows Jack White playing one of his songs "Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground". A very Bluesy song. Jimmy Page picks right up and plays along whereas The Edge struggles to play it. It seems he is lost without his effects rack.

i personally think that it takes a great mind to make a melody with four notes(where the streets have no name)

There is a big difference between a "stripped down" melody and "ah crap this is all I've got". That's all I'm sayin'.

His stage setup is more complicated than Gilmours!!! Amazing to think just what he hides underneath the stage!!!

I kept a copy of the article about how SRV got his "king tone". He used an amazing array of different amps and very few "gadgets".

I dont care too much for Edge's technical ability. His real talent is for fitting his riffs/chords in to catchy rock songs that withstand the test of time.
When i think about it, very few guitarists, if any, equal him in this regard
