I was listening to Hound Dog Taylor, and Lightnin' Hopkins. These are great blues musicians. I had heard of them but had not listened to them. The influence of Lightnin' Hopkins is very clear in the music of Stevie Ray Vaughan. The influence of Hound Dog Taylor is very clear in the music of George Thorogood.

I also listened to BB King's Live at San Quentin and it is excellent too.

I remember in the 60's and 70's my favorite guitarists (Clapton, Hendrix, et al) all mentioned in interviews about their influences by the old blues masters, and it made sense to me I should at least check out the people that shaped the guitar players that I enjoyed. and I gained a respect and admiration for a genre I was barely aware of back then, and quite frankly has been my favorite type of music since.

You might also find some similiar styles when you listen to Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Howlin Wolf, Magic Sam. Willie Dixon, Son House, Blind Willie Johnson, Otis Spann, Otis Rush and other pioneers!

I never pass up a chance to hip someone to Freddie King. Texas Cannonball and Woman Accross the River are can't miss CD's.

My Dad is really into Houston Blues history (which I couldn't understand until recently) and he introduced me to Lightnin' Hopkins even before I'd admit that I liked it.

Rudy: Have a close listen to Albert King. You will likely hear more of his influence in SRV's core structure than Hopkins.

That's true, but the awesome thing is that can hear Lightnin' Hopkins at all. I can't put my finger on exactly what it is, but you can definately hear some Lightnin' Hopkins in SRV's playing. :D In fact, I thought that Lightnin' Hopkins sounded like SRV before I realized who came first.

Some of my old-school favorites:

Pink Anderson
John Lee Hooker
Mississippi John Hurt
Elmore James (there's your George Thorogood influence)
Mance Lipscomb

Enjoy! 8)

Chuck Berry is the guy who took Elmore James and ran with it.

Thats what makes the Albert King and SRV live sessions album so great.

ya know it's kind of funny really. My earliest blues influences were Eric Clapton and BB King...and I guess they still are. I've listened to a lot of the old guys like Johnson, Hopkins, Wolf, Waters, Dixon, etc.. A number of years back I even had the privilege of meeting Robert Lockwood Jr in person. I've always listened to the guys I guess for the historical aspect but over the years but they've never really had much of an "impact" on my own playing that some of the more contemporary greats have had.

Now there is one name here that I didn't see mentioned that I also think is very note worthy...Buddy Guy. I think it was Robert Cray who said "Buddy was psychedelic long before anyone knew what psychedelic was". I really think Buddy took "the blues" to a whole new level...just some really wonderful stuff with Buddy Guy.

Anyways, just my $.02 worth...
Jim

You just beat me too it! I was just about to say, I recently 'discovered' Buddy Guy and he's a great blues player... he's got that great blues instinct for making a few notes say so much... perfect timing and feel. 8)

I also recently also discovered that a 1981 Aria Pro II CS 350 is a great guitar for playin' the blues!! http://guitar-collector.org/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=202
