This reminds me of a band a few years back where we had two female singer/acousic guitar players. Each had to have their own monitor. Then ensued what we would call the "Monitor Wars". Several times during setup, each one would request that they be turned up in their monitor. I had to give a lot of credit to the sound guy, as he knew exactly how to handle this. He would simple turn down the other player from the requester's monitor.

It's kind of funny as this situation I can actually deal with, LOL!!! I guess I probably should have mentioned that there is certainly a difference between "needing to be the loudest" and "not being able to hear yourself". I remember a number of years back when I had first gotten my Lab L5...the first time I used the amp at practice, everyone was yelling at me to turn it down. The funny thing was, I honestly couldn't hear the thing. In this case I had the amp on the floor and was literally standing right next to it. Once I got the amp up on a stand and moved it to the back of the studio....wow...what a difference. I've certainly had the wrestling matches with folks not being able to hear themselves over the monitors as well. It's really hard to do decent harmonies if you can't actually hear yourself over everyone else in the monitor (which is part of the reason our stage rig is up to 4 stage monitors and 1 spot monitor).

That said though, I have also worked with people where it really is an ego thing or something...they just have to be louder than everyone and that's where I have problems.

Peace,
Jim

Nowadays, I bring my Blues Jr which basically serves as my personal monitor. I have it sitting on the floor leaning back using a StandBack stand. The DigiTech GNX4 has XLR outputs which I take to the house PA. This setup has been working well for me for several months now.
