Yeah, often all that does is instantly obsolete a bunch of software that you had been using. I learned that lesson the hard way. Be careful what you ask for ...

I've been doing installs since Thursday, my feelings on it so far:

Okay, where to start....here goes...

1. The way you manipulate windows and open programs is slicker.

2. If you want to make use of larger amounts of memory it is either desirable or required. Desirable in that the way post XP OSes use RAM helps some processes; required (ignoring XP 64 bit version, as almost everyone did) if you want to use more than about 3.5 gigs or RAM.

3. Task and thread scheduling improved. Better use of hyperthreading and multicore CPUs.

4. Like Unix, OS-X, and Vista, it doesn’t assume that you will want to run in full “root” or Administrative access all the time. This is controversial, but I personally dislike running an Internet connected PC where my user processes all have the rights of an Admin login.—and I think I know what I’m doing.

5. Support for modern WiFi and power saving modes is better than XP.

6. The graphics subsystem lets the graphics hardware handle more of the load of handling the display. Hooks in place to let graphics processing units handle other processes (like video transcoding for example).

7. Better built-in support for hardware typically found inside a computer than XP. If I install W7 on an older computer I usually don’t need to find a network card driver, sound driver, video driver etc. but if I’m installing XP I almost always need too.

8. Windows Media Center is kind of cool. Yes, there was a XP Media Center, but like XP 64 bit Edition, I’m not assuming XP users are talking about that. Cheap tuner device and you’re got a instant HD TV/DVR combo that works with a remote control.

Older printers and scanners, and probably other peripherals, XP has better support. Not built in, but in drivers that were written years ago when the peripherals were still being sold.

Windows 7 can use almost any Vista driver, which by now means most current stuff is supported.

Version differences:

Ultimate: adds enterprise features that are probably only of interest to those that work in a larger company and manage their Windows computers with server/Active Directory based policies. No advantage to a consumer unless you routinely switch between foreign languages or want to run full disk encryption. Includes everything in Pro and Home Premium too.

Professional. Adds ability to host Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) sessions from another computer (like the freeware product VNC, but built in, and a bit cooler). With RDP you use another computer to remotely view the stuff on your computer, as if you had a “really long mouse cord, keyboard.cable and a telescope to view your screen”. Also has the ability to join a Windows domain (might be useful to a small business). For those with modern AMD processors and some Intel processors, Pro adds a free “XP Mode” that is a pretty slick virtual machine deal in that it includes a free copy of XP SP3. If you have an XP license already you can use free products like Virtual Box and not have to worry about if you have a processor that supports hardware virtualization extensions (many common CPUs don’t). Includes everything in Home Premium too.

Home Premium: what most non-business buyers will get and probably what most people need if they’re buying Windows 7.

Seems to me upgrading the OS always leads to misery, one way or another.

Unlike many others my newish computer with Vista on it seems to be behaving fairly well. And the other one with XP never puts a foot wrong.

So I'll stick with what I've got till there's a pressing reason to change!

Luddite? Me...?

:D - C

My XP pro never done me wrong until this past week but it has not run as good as it used to for months . I going to put it back in the one PC when fixed. My Son runs Vista and lets just say Windows Millenium and then that  We all know how well that one went. All one year wonders. ( Wonder Whys!!!!) The XP pro ran much better on service pack 1 and 2 then it did on service pack 3 because it included all the the bad updates that I did not install from pack 2 which realty messed up Photo Shop and outllook features. To many work arounds so when I do a new install it service pack 2 only. I can't wait for the Macs to arrive though!!!! I am hoping they are worth all the extra money that Macs cost. Seems all the computer techies say Mac all the way!!!! Time I find out!!!!

Not really expensive. Not anymore so than most PC systems. You can get a Macmini for less than $599. You can use the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers that you are already using for your PC with the Macmini.
