For me the hardest part about songwriting is the lyrics. I think a lot and have a lot to say, but sometimes it's tough to write the words down in a way that flows nicely and ensues deep meaning. Music constantly runs through my head and I can usually make things up pretty easily. If I get stuck in the music making process I usual turn to theory and find a good sounding next stop in the song. But really the best way to get good at songwritting is to keep attempting it. If you aren't satisfied with your song go through it and make some changes. I really don't think any big artist is completely satisfied with their songs. That's why when you go to live shows there is usually something different from the recording. I don't think you are ever finished with a song.

Are we talking music or lyrics here? I see comments from both ends.

I record my own music/instrumentals... but can't write out the tabulature. I can't sing, so I don't bother with the lyrics, but I can write lyrics when needed.

As with any song, it's got to be smart and creative... you know how it is... when you hear the first few bars or words of a song, you either love it or hate it.

I don't think I could write lyrics at first but I found that I could and got better with each song. I could always create a medley but the recording of our first CD, I knew that we wouldn't get any good reviews and sell CDs if we didn't have original songs.

We had 1500 copies and sold them all :D . We sold about 300 copies overseas, due to that review in Blues Revue http://www.bluesrevue.com/ and the other http://www.primeblues.com/reviews.html.

As a writing exercise, take one of you favorite band's song and write lyrics to their medley. Write about how you feel, write your favorite past-time, write about your boy/girl-friend, etc .

That's a great idea. I think I'll have to give that a shot. If anything I can modify the lyrics after that and apply them to something I wrote.

You're right :!: I write from titles, meaning I have a title for a song, and than write the lyrics. If I'm stuck for a medley, I'll use another song and than tweak the medley.

I also carry a voice recorder so that if my muse visits me, I have the lyrics recorded.

It's not a "medley." That is when you take short exceprts from several songs and play them together in one performance.

What you guys are calling a "medley" is, in fact, a "melody."

(Deep meaning ensues.)

Anybody interested in collaborating on an idea I have based on a letter my cousin sent me from his tour of duty in Iraq last year? It has been bouncing around in my head for the last year.

sure, i'd be interested. don't know how much help i could be, but i'm willing to do what i can.

if you want an idea of the kind of stuff i do, i've got some videos on youtube from a battle of the bands i did recently. i didn't actually have a band, i just needed money(college student), so i called a drummer and we decided to wing it. the sound quality's pretty bad, it was taken with a small digital camera, plus we weren't allowed to do soundchecks, so the conditions for many reasons are less than perfect. but oh well. such is life.

an original

another original

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tO9CFXQqfyc
cover i did of bruce springsteen's "reason to believe"

anybody's welcome to check these out, and message me with feedback(i'd rather not have that sort of thing posted on the forum). my email is stokeskr@mail.ab.edu

I feel it's a matter of opinion. I write along with my guitar, it helps me to fit the lyrics to the melody I have in mind. I can't write lyrics without a melody.

Is 10 songs enough? Again, it's a matter of opinion, I'd rather hear 10 good songs, than 14 crappy ones. BTW, we're recording 14 original songs for our second CD 'The Cold Backhand of Love'.

that's really cool. once my band gets off the ground, we'll have some more songs... i don't think we'll do like Green Day's Nimrod album though, there's 18 on there...
