Hi robt8500: over and above Brian's own original guitar there's a long history to people making copies of it, both commercially and privately. Burns Of London were making the official Sig model for some years: now Brian has himself set up a company to do it.

And if you do a bit of Googling you can find several websites devoted to folks building replicas of the Red Special from scratch. They get very competitive about who can get the knobs right and make the bridge as close as possible to the original.

Weird, geeky - and quite good fun!

Cheers - C

HAHA that is really good!! it should become some sort of reality show.
and about the above people you mentioned... they might be sad to see that the official Brian May replica has CHANGED the vibrato.

You know... i'd been playing guitar professionally for 10 years
before it dawned on me that the tones & melodic sensibility i was
always trying to achieve were completely inspired by Brian May.

(Him & Eddie Hazel, actually)

But i was never inclined to want any of his replica guitars.

That may have changed after seeing
that new Black & White one though. ;)

Indeed! But then - have you seen the bridge on the real Red Special? It ain't exactly ideal...

An item of useless info on that: I have a CD from Guitarist magazine from several years ago where Brian demos his real Red Special against the latest replica of it - at that time it was the Burns. To the ear I can't tell the difference, and he politely said he couldn't either. He sounds like Brian May on both.

And then more recently also on a Guitarist mag DVD Simon Bradley put together an AC30, a Fryer Treble Booster and Sig Red Special and tried his very hardest to sound like Brian May. Not bad - but you could easily tell it wasn't Brian.

Which takes us back to that well worn adage about it all being in the fingers...

Cheers - C

EDIT: Spelling... D'oh!

Our very own Khashoggi just recently picked up one of these. She seems pretty happy with it. 8)

You bet. Brian May would sound like Brian May on a strat as well, I think you would agree. :)

Yes I think Brian would sound like himself on a Strat. I always remember Ted Nugent telling this story in Guitar Player magazine years ago. Vanhalen had just come out and were opening for Nugent and he said he was watching Eddie during sound check and walked up to him and asked him if he could play through his rig and Eddie handed him his ax and he said what came out was Ted Nugent.lol That is so true about it being all in the fingers and Brian May falls into that fold of all you need to hear is one note to know who it is.

That is SO true! Whether you're a Queen fan or not, it's just one of the all time most distinctive, juicy guitar tones, isn't it? Knockout!

Absolutley! That's why no 2 guitarists (even on the exact same gear) sound identical . Try it with your friends. Player one, play something that your buddy knows, then hand him (or her) the guitar and have them play the same piece. It sounds noticeably different!
