Hello, OhioKid... I've tried a lot of things... Right now, I'm using SONAR Home Studio. That's a personal choice that I'm comfortable with. The speakers are important too. But, until I can afford good monitors to mix with I'm using headphones.

I think the most important thing is your interface. If you have a good sound going in, there's less to fix in the mix. I decided to go old school PCI and bought M-Audio's Delta 44 and a Mic Pre Amp. They now have new Vista drivers (32 and 64 bit) on their website that solved all my problems. I wish I had them 6 tunes ago, but you live and learn.

If you are going to use your on-board soundcard, then at least use a mixer plugged into your line in port. If you can afford a Mac... that's a great choice. If I could afford a Mac, I'd have one. I'm using a Dell desktop. Works fine.
