My favorites are the ones that show how demented real people could actually be...

Which version of Cape Fear did you like best?

That's a tough one... I love the original, but De Niro is (IMO) one of the best actors of all time. He really makes it believable.

C'mon - the best is The Rocky Horror Picture Show!

Yes, yes, yes!

Maybe it's worldwide, I don't know: but where I live the Rocky Horror Show is the cult classic to end 'em all. We have big public screenings where everyone turns up dressed as characters in the film and sings along all the way through caraoke style.

Naturally, most of the fellas come as Tim Curry - the sight of several dozen Dr Frank-n-Furters all doing The Timewarp leaves a trauma medical science has yet to address...:

I am told that -

"On All Hallows' eve, the ancient Celts would place a carved skeleton on their window sill to represent the departed. Originating in Europe, these lanterns were first carved from a turnip. Believing that the head was the most powerful part of the body, containing the spirit and the knowledge, the Celts used the "head" of the vegetable to frighten off harmful spirits. Welsh, Irish and British myths are full of legends of the Brazen Head, which may be a folk memory of the widespread ancient Celtic practice of headhunting, the results of which were often nailed to a door lintel or brought to the fireside to speak their wisdom. The name jack-o'-lantern can be traced back to the Irish legend of Stingy Jack, a greedy, gambling hard-drinking old farmer. He tricked the devil into climbing a tree and trapped him by carving a cross into the tree trunk. In revenge, the devil placed a curse on Jack, condemning him to forever wander the earth at night with the only light he had....a candle inside of a hollowed turnip."

Ooo - good stuff, Mike!

And it all has much nastier origins - here's the famous portico from the 3rd century BC "celtic" shrine of Roquepertuse:

Image

And the Romans (hardly the softest of people) gave shocked accounts of gory human sacrifice carried out by celtic druids. Numerous archaeological finds to corroborate that.

All throws a cold light on the twaddle people like to talk about peaceable celts with their gentle earth goddess, doesn't it?

Humans are horrid: but it makes good for good films... :D

Cheers - C

Yes Ceri...and some think it's all about free candy!

Regarding horror flicks, when I was about 17, I saw Rosemary's Baby. It skeered the bejeepers out of me. If anyone who truly likes horror movies likes, give it a try :

DeNiro was great in that role and I agree, one of the all time greats!

Hehe Rosemary's baby freaked me oout too. i was way too young when i saw it.

Horror movies usually don't scare me (like romantic comedies usually do!!)

But i think a true masterpiece is John Carpenter's "The Thing" starring Kurt Russell. I much prefer it to the original, a fine film but limited by the special effects of the time.

I thought the Howard Hawks version 'The Thing from Another World' a sci- fi masterpiece I guess and partly because there is a woman in this movie, the John Carpenter remake 'The Thing' blocked itself story-wise in favor of gory special effects

Alfred Hitchcock had some pretty good ones too.

If you don't mind subtitles, I recommend the 1967 Russian film Viy (Вий), based on a story by Nikolai Gogol. The special effects are a little hokey by today's standards, but it is a genuinely creepy movie.

Here's a short clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eI38OrAOiY8

Another good foreign film is the 2008 Swedish vampire film Let The Right One In (Låt den rätte komma in). Expand your horizons with some quality non-US cinema. 8)

Hey, I mentioned Audition!

I don't think there is anything creepier than Japanese horror, the genre called "Asia Extreme." They have invented an entirely new (and skin-crawling) vocabulary for scare. Even the Americanized films (like the recent Shutter) exhibit an extremely high "Ewwwww" factor.

But if you can watch the last 20 minutes of Audition without looking away... well, go for it.

No slam intended, SlapChop. I just wanted to endorse the whole world of entertainment out there. Kudos for recognizing that Hollywood isn't the only source.

I haven't seen Audition, but I'll have to give it a look. I have seen Ringu and its US remake (The Ring), both of which creeped me out royally. 8)

As an aside, anyone who enjoyed the Robin Williams/Nathan Lane comedy The Bird Cage should check the infinitely funnier original La Cage Aux Folles. Not a horror movie, but another fine example of non-US cinema.

The original of The Ring was/is my favourite. I think the subtitles draw you into the plot more, you have to pay more attention because of them.

Other than that I dont know, I dont really watch horror films. I wish someone could make a good film of Lovecrafts, Randolph Carter stories. Or maybe even a decent version of At the mountains of madness. They would be far better tales than that lord of the rings nonsense.
