The only movie that can actually scare me (blame my Catholic upbringing ... haha) is The Exorcist
Check out the relatively recent extended director's cut. Great movie...

Also, checkout Exorcist III with George C Scott. While not scary like the first, it is a FANTASTIC yet often overlooked film...

I also vote for The Exorcist... Part of the shock is the fact that the victim is a 12 year old girl. I had read the book before hand, but it still got to me. Mostly because I was raised Catholic. The nuns at the school I went to were scary enough!

My daughter still refuses to watch it.

The Shining

The Ring

And, a Japanese film in the "Asia extreme" horror movie genre that is one of the most disturbing things I've ever seen called Audition.

C'mon - the best is The Rocky Horror Picture Show!

Tim Curry = Dr Frank-N-Furter
Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick = Jan and Brad
Richard O'Brien = Riff Raff
Meatloaf = Eddie

Any movie with Meatloaf, a hunchback servant and a Transsexual, Transylvanian Transvestite Mad Scientist as lead characters has got to be a Halloween classic!

This is a terrific British rock comedy and a musical feast!

A toast!

You need to see this at a midnight movie at least once in your life.

+1 8)

I also love The Nightmare Before Christmas, the all-purpose end-of-year irreverent holiday film.

Like RickyD, I generally prefer my horror mixed with a generous dose of comedy and music.

However, I also stand with SlapChop on The Ring. The climactic scene near the end scared the crap out of me!
