Listen to Zep,the Who,Vanhalen,The Police and other four piece bands that only have 3 playing, but listen to the live albums as that will give you an idea of what are the meat and potato parts and can spark some creativity in your own playing. Then theres always the option of getting another guitarist. In a trio it is so important that the bass and drums are locked in, and I really mean locked. If you look at the three piece format bands even those with a singer usually all of them have some of the greatest bass players and drummers in history.

my band is a four piece, but only 3 instruments. the singer just sings,so only guitar ,bass and drums. we play about 3-4 nights a month and cover everything from motown and r&b to disco and metal...we had another guitarist at one point and i hated it.it is so much more room to play without fighting a seconed guitars tone. check out our site and see our song list for ideas and you can also hear us play alot of them as well.

Well you did ask, get 2 more drummers ,2 more guitar players 3 back up vocalists a lead singer ,2 keyboard players and a horn section then try some Zappa. Of coarse you might not fit on stage anymore.

Hi gratz, I was watching Zappa on tv a few days ago and Man!! what a line-up.
I played in a twelve piece band once. Fantastic fun.
Hope you're keeping well and rock on. 8)

Get another guitarist if you are doing AC/DC. Same if you did Guns N' Roses, Aerosmith or The Stones.....I would wanna hear both parts, i.e. I wouldn't wanna hear my favourite fills or licks missing.

Just my 2 cents.

Rock on bro.

I was in a band that started as a three piece but the bassist took up guitar and we got a different bassist in but the sound because a bit muddy due to more rhythm guitar so, more isnt always better i soppose.

I think that bands without duplicate instruments work better since you get more across i think. But thats just my opinion, some bands do some great things with dual guitars with harmonies and whatnot.

Also, great three pieces:
Primus, Rush, Muse, Nirvana (Debatable)

Great bands that could get away with a three piece:
Tool, System of a down, faith no more, the who (Theres hundreds, im just naming a few of my favorites)

Nice. My friend Layla plays in a three piece - Ugly Radio Rebellion, and they're an outstanding Zappa band. To the point where Ike Willis is always playing and touring with them playing Zappa shows. Certainly not easy though...
